Not just securex sheaths......

Apparently, every plastic sheath I have tested out has pulled the super fine razor edge off my knives. Have a gerber warrant with a plastic insert, definitely cheaply molded plastic, not decent concealex, and if I am not careful to avoid running the edge across the plastic, it dulls as well. A bit of research shows kydex is capable of this problem as well. I wonder if someone can convince cold steel to start putting cloth or something that isn't hard plastic inside as a liner. Or even go back to leather. I love my leather trailmaster sheath on my old TM and loved the leather sheath on my laredo. None of them dulled my knives :D

Leather would be cool. I've also long called for a return to Cordura. Not the cheapie ones like the Krupp knives come with, but the nicer ones they've had on some of their pricier fixed blades in the past. Here's one with an old SRK:

The only thing I'd change would be to use a thumb break strap instead of the one that's on there.

Those are good too. I just hate either having to baby my knife or replace the sheath. It's really deterred me from buying a lot of new cold steel fixed blades.

Also on some securex sheaths the knives don't release easily. In fact it can be a real PITA to draw the blade from the sheath making it borderline useless in an emergency situation where you need the knife NOW! The codura sheaths were better in many regards.

Kydex may dull blades as well, but the securex is glass fiber reinforced plastic so the effect is much more dramatic. Check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYmCknPXj7Y&feature=youtu.be

Had the same issue with my CS Kobun, which I managed to prove with a little experimentation

Strop it and use it- retains a fairly good edge, considering the steel.
Strop it and take in and out of the sheath 5-8 times- Edge is duller than half a day of medium-heavy use in the garden.

I'm not crazy about how the securex sheaths wear the handles. Give me leather or nylon please.

I'm also not a fan of SecureEx dulling the edge - a sheath doing the exact opposite of what a sheath is supposed to do! I also thought it was a shame that the new carbon Laredo bowies got a micarta handle upgrade, but the sheath went from the cool leather with a frog to SecureEx.

I am not a fan of the securex sheaths in general but have accepted them for most models.
But the one securex sheath I can not accept is the one CS provides with Black Bear Classic.
I feel almost as if it is knife world sin to not provide a traditional leather sheath for this particular
model. Any homage to RWL is wiped out by this sheath.

Send it to Mike Sastre for a Southern Comfort! Definitely deserves a better sheath that knife does...

Pretty much ruins the point of that knife. I won't be buying any more cold steel until they change their sheaths. It's been an issue long enough. The difference between cold steels sheaths and other companies plastic sheaths is cold steels scratches the blade and comes into repeated contact with the edge.

Nice to know I am not the only one displeased with the Securex sheath.
I only have two CS blades that came with that sheath (G.I. Tanto and a Bushman) I need to make a leather or nylon sheath for them.
I wonder ... Does CS uses the Securex sheath over some potential liability issue?
