Not Knives in NYC but Sling Shots

I know this is not the place to post this question. As such, if it has to be deleted, I understand.

My friends and I are approaching our up-state NY hiking trips. We often travel off the beaten path and once ended up lost for about eight hours (used our compass to navigate out). We do carry an assortment of survival equipment, however, we have nothing "primitive" that we can hunt with (if we had to). As such, I was wondering if NYS residents were allowed to own sling-shots. I know that the law states that wrist-braced sling shots are not allowed, but what about the sling shots that can only be held in your hand with no wrist support?

Thanks!

i live up state.wrist rockets are illegal to sell, dont think illegal to own.just bought one for my boy at the syracuse gun show this last weekend.the cops dont care.regular sling shots a fine to posses.but in ny you never know, the only state more restrictive than us is cali.

Actually, the laws in California are much better then NY in many weapon related things, knives in particular.

InNew York State bagging game out of season will land you in jail no matter what you use to take it. you would be better off packing a lunch, fishing also requires a license, even with the proper tag during hunting season some items are banned from hunting such as cross bow's slings and sling shots, just having them with you in the field during the season can land you in hot water my best advice is for you to contact the NY State DEC and find out what is allowed

all hunting rules aside,it is not illegal to posses a sling shot in the woods.ive carried a rifle in the woods when their was no real game in season.when the dec asked why i had a rifle out of season i simply said that i like to be armed when 10 miles from the nearest dirt road,as do they, evident of the glock on their hips.

mike is right, pack a lunch and do not hunt with a sling shot....but if someone doesnt like you carrying one---too bad! believe it or not this is still america and as far as sling shots are concerned doesnt anyone remember DENNIS THE MENICE?

while i dont know all laws in either state and dont pretend to be a lawyer i have to disagree.california only allows single shot assault rifles, banned all .50cals,banned titanium knives and im sure they have a blade length restriction.
didnt san francisco ban all firearms period inside the city limits?

now out of curiosity in what ways are california less restrictive????oh ya,pot
ny has no blade length limit,no caliber limit,no semi-auto ban,no titanium knife ban and in no city are firearms outlawed, although in nyc their are no concealed carry permits allowed.

Slingshots w/out braces are legal to own it is however illegal to hunt with a slingshot, perhaps you should consider asking a similar question over at the wilderness and survival training forum where I'm from. But in Ny where I spend most of my outdoortime Hunting for food is pretty low on the list of surivival priorities obviously fire shelter water and deciding whether to navigate out or sit tight need to take precedence as the human body can go some time without food..first aid training and a great kit would be good, if food is a major concern, soem small fishing gear and a working knowledge of edible plants can go a long way, if you are in the NYC area check out WILDMAN steve brill he gives wild edible plant wals throughout woodlots in th tristate area for very cheap, I've done several of his walks, they are awesome. if hunting is really a large concern for you I'd reccomend taking a NYS hunter safety course, getting a rifle permit if within the 5 buroughs and looking at picking up a small take down .22 rifle such as the Marlin papoose, or the savage "steven's favorite" Good luck, maybe I'll see you on the trail..

RR is right that the non wrist supported sling shots are leagl to own, but not to hunt with. I go along with take a fishing line and a few hooks. Rifle/shorguns only need a permit in NYC and there is a ban on hunting in NYC. Good luck !! Northern 1 becareful with the wrist rocket type sling shot as they are illegal to own and sell. I see them in NY gun store / shows too but the law is the law and the dealer will get told to "put those things away" but a LEO might "put you away" for having it...

Wow, great feedback!

I already have a NYC Rifle/Shotgun permit and a NY State Super Sportsman's license. As such, I am ok in that area. I guess I was referring to the most extreme situations because we spend a lot of time way up in the Adirondacks, and we can't always seem to get a cell phone signal.

However, you are correct by saying "pack a lunch." We can always look into bringing more transportable food (i.e MREs). I also like the idea about the class on edible plants, maybe time to take that class.

Anyway, back to knives......

Thanks!
