Not quite a knife purse

I carry my Ken Erickson trapper every day, but I got tired of having it rest horizontally in my pocket, so I decided to do something about it. At first I was inspired by the back pocket cases that Ron Ryder made for Blues, but of course I ended up modifying it. The first modification was to switch around to front pocket carry, and then I decided to wet-form the leather around the knife. Then I figured that since I was going to make the whole thing pretty wide so it wouldn't fall over in my pocket, I might as well make use of the extra width, so I added a spot for my pocket flashlight. The edge lacing/braiding happened because I was tired of sewing, and was really a heck of a lot easier than sewing, too. When I finished it my wife said "Wow, that thing is basically a redneck pocket protector." All the leather I used came from the scrap bin at the local Tandy Leather store; other than that, the only thing I bought especially for this project was the leather dye. Everything else I had on hand from teaching myself to braid or other projects.

I hope y'all like it, and it's not too purse-like. :D

Very nicely done. I bet the lacing instead of sewing actually helps stabilize it in the pocket, with a little friction.

That looks great, and I 'll bet it works quite well also. I'd be happy to have one of those in my pocket! Nice job!

Love the colors and lacing! well done. Also wanted to say thanks for carrying and using that trapper everyday!

I have to admit as well, that isn't a purse. IT's CLOSE, but I think we self appointed knife purse police couldn't even give you a warning for that one.

If you would have tooled an oak leaf with acorns that would have been a whole different story :D

Nicely done and very folksy.

Looks good and it works. That's all that matters. If it was embellished with sequins or rhinestones then we'd have to reevaluate the whole "purse-like" thing.;););)

James, that's a nice piece of work.

I like the term "redneck pocket protector"! Folk(sy) art at its best! Useful, with form following function. Great invention.
I'll give you $1,000,000 for it!! Well . . . . . maybe not that much!
May the folksy be with you!

James, the "pocket protectors" I had Ron make up that time came in two sizes and I can use either one in the front and/or back pocket of my jeans. (Haven't tried 'em in other pants (and I don't wear slacks, whatever they are  ) since I'm nearly always in jeans or their canvas equivalents.)

Your creation is certainly an upgrade but the thing I like about the ones Ron made is that they are so thin they are basically just pocket liners and allow retrieval of the knife directly yet still maintain them in a vertical position.

Of course, if I had any talent at all, I might try my hand at something folksy like you've created.

Thanks a lot for the praise, guys, it made my day. And thank you for the reassurance, Kerry; I feel better knowing for sure that I'm not carrying a knife purse. :)

I'm pretty attached to this one, Charlie, but thanks for the offer. I'll keep it in mind. :D The problem with making one for someone else is that I have to have the objects I'm gonna mold the leather around to really make it fit right. Well, that and how many people carry a slipjoint and an Arc AAA flashlight? I guess I could make one for a slipjoint and a Zippo or a Bic lighter... Hm.

And I see your point and agree with you completely, Blues. In fact, I'll probably make myself a thinner one for those (thankfully) rare occasions when I have to wear dress pants. But for my usual jeans, this is about perfect for me.
