so here's the deal: i can either get a queen stockman i've been eyeing for a long while, get a traditional german electrician style knife, or get several of A.G. Russell's new takes on old patterns-some of the locking models. what to do, what to do!? the first two have awls/punches which i'm way into right now, either of which i may not see again soon-ooor i can get two knives, both traditional styles but (possibly) upgraded steel and style of construction. any helpful advice or comments would be appreciated.
thanks, Neal

I say get the stockman, which is my favorite pattern by far. Queen makes a great knife.
What do the German electrician knives look like? Can you tell me what brand? I'm interested in looking at one, as I haven't heard of them before.

check out the hubertus site, model called the "professional". stockman is a queen #49f, d2 steel with punch and pick, bem.
thanks, Neal p.s. the german knife is in walnut , steel unknown, mint-vintage(who knows, shrug, looks nice in pictures) and does cost less

quantity better than uncommon, if not rare? ag's stuff is all 8cr13mov, queen d2, german, who knows. my wife might notice the stockman the least:). always a factor.
thanks, Neal

The german knife is interesting, but when it comes to knives quality comes over quantity I say. After all, I find myself at the most carrying three knives at a time, so I don't like to buy a lot of models, just a nice stockman, a nice peanut, a nice whittler, and the rest goes to flea markets.

My bird's eye maple #49 broke both springs. I'd get a different cover material in hopes avoiding that lot of springs.

GEC #66 Calf Roper or any Case Stockman are of much better quality than anything Queen produces, imo.

The GEC has a good chance, if not assured, but Case is hit or miss. Gotta try it in person to see. I very much dislike my Case Stockman because of its mushy springs, blade rub, and gaps. The Queen winterbottom I have from when Queen was making their knives cheap to compete with imports is better quality than my Case.

I'm also in the camp of less higher quality knives vs. more knives. For my money, I'd go with the Queen stockman. They do a great job on that pattern.

Hey Neal here's my two cents just buy what you think you want and will like based on what you plan to use the knife for. I used to let other knife knuts likes and dislikes influence what I bought and yes ended up with some knives I liked but also a lot that I didn't care for and never used. Here's an example there is a new sticky for blade shape on the 2016 Forum knife clip or spear. Most are voting for spear but I like a clip better neither answer is wrong just different strokes for different folks. So what ever decision you make will be the best one because you made it for yourself. Good luck my friend.

R redden -thanks for the words of encouragement. Cory, ConBon, leo scrteened porch : i appreciate the input. hopefully i won't have a problem with the springs, because i'm going queen(doesn't sound right, written down). i like d2 (Dozier influence) and if the springs go i'll send it back to queen, maybe they could get me one of the stag handled #49fs thats up on an auction site now:).
thanks, Neal

oh if anyone is interested the german knife is less than what i paid for the queen, and is around a large auction site, if you wanted to look for informational purposes. i'd never seen one 'til a pic showed up a couple times in either the forum knife thread or waynorths texas campknife thread. pretty sure it's the forum knife thread-one of the parts about awls/punches. bon chance.
thanks, Neal

If you've never done business with AG Russell, I'd suggest going with those. Mr Russell's team is all about customer satisfaction and quality in the knives they sell. After meeting him, seeing his store and products, and dealing with his staff, I'm sold. I'll go even so far as to say if I was offered the choice between a Case and an AG Russell, I'd pick the Russell even knowing it was likely not made in the U.S. You can't go wrong with them.

i actually have dealt with them in the past and found them to be everything you say and more. i'm sure i'll still get the patterns i was thinking of just a little further down the road;), money's always tight here, so somebody will always be getting my business in the future. 'sides he's a dozier direct distributor, i check out his site almost everyday, and the cuttingedge site and catalog pdf every few weeks or so. (not much of a knife geek am i?;).) appreciate it though Btm.; plus i ordered the stockman today, so....
thanks, Neal
