Not really a poll, but more like an opinion...

Within the past yr, I've gotten into slip-joints. Now, don't get me wrong, I've had slippys when I was a kid, but I just never paid attention to them & what make they were/are until the last yr or so.

Growing up, & looking at them now (& my Grandfathers' knives he left me), most seem to be Imperials for whatever reason (U.S. & Ireland made). Anyways, I've gotten into EDCing a slippy, along with whatever folder I carry & usually a neckknife (Along with a gun or 2, but that depends on if I'm working or off-duty).

So, I've noticed that, like in folders, my tastes have gone up as my interest has (Although at a steeper curve than with folders). I have & use a GEC, got in at the last moment & got the '08 BFC knife (& have used/carried it). I'm proud to say I've joined many of you & got into the voting & idea process for the '09 knife (Of which I'm really looking forward to), & got lucky & managed to get an '07 BFC knife off of a BF member (Thank you).

Well, I thought I found a great user in the GEC Barlow Wharncliffe, then thought a Case Seahorse Whittler (Orange G-10 with Wharncliffe main blade) was it, but then picked up a Ty Montell custom Trapper (Older 440C model, but with Ti bolsters, spacers, filework, & pre-ban ivory). Well, I just did a trade for a Case/Bose Collarboration Dogleg Jack in antique bone, so I really stepped in IT with both feet this time, lol.

Sorry for the boorish preamble, but how many use their Case/Bose Collab., customs, or other "high-end" slippies? By that, I mean, EDC, not just for a Sunday outting. Me, I use the slippy most of the time, especially if I'm among people (& not at work). It's just easier to not get a "comment" out of someone & they usually compliment whatever it is I pull out (The knife, of course).

Thanks again & for allowing me to ramble.

Wow!. That was one helluva lot to get through..

.. OK, if I understand the question for which you want my opinion...

.. YES, I use all my slipjoint folders!. Some more than others for various reasons.

Hope this helps a little.

I have several customs that I regularly use. (Probably more than a sane person should own and use. :D)

I get the most enjoyment out of them when they are used. Much more than the ones that are "put up".

That dogleg collaboration makes for a great carry knife (at least I think so, but that is not saying very much.)

Two knives I have been carrying since I got them were made by guys who participate here.

Kerry Hampton and Ken Erickson.
They are both very nice knives, but what makes them a little nicer to me is knowing the folks who made them a little.

Neither of the above look quite so nice since the pics were taken before I got my paws on the knife, but a few scuffs and scratches here and there are the result of some enjoyable use. ;)

Me too. All of my slipjoints get used, with the exception of a handful of knives that I am saving for my nephews. I have a Kerry Hampton KHnutbuster that will see regular duty, and I have a couple of other nice knives that'll be put to work once I receive them.

I know some people can collect knives like museums collect art, and if that floats your boat, more power to you. Personally, I feel compelled to carry/use every knife I own. I do "baby" a few because they are expensive/special and I don't want to beat them up, but I carry, and use, them all.
IMHO, if you can't cut anything with it, it's not really a knife now is it.*

*Really old, or otherwise irreplaceable examples being preserved for reference not included.

I do not have any real high end slippies. I will not hack my better knives, but I will use them. I do not collect just to put on a shelf. So, I carry a hacker blade if need be and then a nicer one to do everyday stuff. My children will not inherit any mint knives from me. Good Lord willin' and the creek don't rise of course.

That CASE Dogleg not only looks very nice but I suspect it DOES make a credible user as well. However, I think the next Case/Bose collab the Norfolk will be even better and even though my times are not as good as they were, I shall be getting one and using on a regular basis. It's just the wait and wondering where to get it that does me in...

I don't really think a knife is too good to use,it actually means you don't really like it! and remember, you can always gape at artefacts and knives in a museum free or at nominal charge

I carry a few of my custom knives, but very few like 3 or 4. I do carry a Case/Bose Arkansas Hunter in Ebony. I find it a very good pocket knife for my needs...

I understand if you didn't carry your Swayback, but it would make great carry also.....

Well, I have been carrying the Montell custom Trapper for the last week, so when the Case/Bose gets here, I "shouldn't" have a problem carrying it, but we'll see.

I have some nice early red bone Case knives. Until recently, they were put up.
I spent a lot of time looking for some of these. Mint condition with very nicely matched scales..
These are the ones that I kept after my downsizing. I really like these knives and decided that because I liked them so much, I would get even more enjoyment out of carrying them.

I now know that I should have been carrying them long ago.

I have a lot different perspective on things now . All in all, much happier

BTW Gus, those are both very nice

IMHO, knives are like girls and cars................it's a love affair. So whether your EDC is an Old Timer with awesome sawed bone handles that you picked up at the flea market, or that custom that you just sweated bullets to pay for, it should be carried, used, touched, caressed and enjoyed.

We all know what happens when we don't pay attention to our girl. No need to say more about that.

A car, if you don't drive it, it slowly deteriorates because it was meant to be driven. Ball joints flatten, seals dry up and rot, belts lose their pliability and a whole host of problems arise from a car that just sits and is never driven.

A knife not used is just a shame. Safe queens deteriorate just sitting there too.

Part of the love affair with your EDC's is your ability to use it as the tool it was made to be. So, carry all your knives if you can. Some more than others, obviously.

That's all I know.

Keep Care,

Tim

(and pleeze......cars and knives are not the same as a girl. We all know this. I use this example to illustrate the point is all)

I have several high end slipjoints. Mostly customs, but there are Case/Bose Queen/Burke knives in there as well.

I carry and use them. I don't abuse them, but they can and do handle normal knife tasks.

The makers that I like make their knives to be used, and to last for several generations.

I love the feel of using a well-made custom-the walk and talk, how it looks, how it cuts--everything about it.

Well, the highest end folders that I own are Cases and the forum knives (07,08,09 eventually), and then some Queens etc, on down. But that said, yes I carry all of them and use them for most stuff. I commonly carry a big liner lock because I do alot of heavy cardboard cutting etc, and I'd just rather beat up and dull a cheaper beater knife, but there's no reason the nicer traditionals couldn't handle all of it. I've found myself leaving the bigger folder either home or in the tool case more lately anyway. I use the slippies for pretty much everything else, and carry them in the pocket, with all the other crap that rides in there. I know some people like to use a pocket purse :D , or an otherwise empty pocket, but I just never have. Different strokes for different folks and all that. The wear I put on them is good honest wear and I like the pocket worn look anyway. Keeps me from obsessing over the shiny showing scratches. The only ones that I have "put up" are the ones in the junk box.

To be fair, if I ever get around to buying a nice custom (please, "if" hehehe), I might be more careful about the pocket wear, but it'll be carried none the less.
