Not sure about this one - a custom Mini-Bowie

I am really not sure about this one I just made. Something about it doesn't sit right - a little too different from what I usually make I don't like it, but the customer seems to.

The 4inch blade is forged virgin bar stock 1095, edge quenched, not finished to show the hamon. Brass guard, spacer made from a recycled washing machine component, full polished, handle of Red Deer antler, inset decorative button in the butt.

I made one like this 5years ago and submitted it amongst 4 other knives for entry into the Australian Knifemakers Guild. I made it to be rustic and "recycled" but a guy who frequents the local knife shows liked it so much, he bought it and has been bugging me for 4 years to make another one for him. The recycled brass plumbing component was the key piece for him...

What do you guys think ? Am I being too neurotic ? Thanks in advance. Jason.

The shape is good and all.

The guard looks too wide in comparison to the blade. It makes the blade look shorter than it is.

Not a big, major deal. :D

Blade is great, but I agree with Kohai. Plus, I'm more of a "I like brass in small amounts" kind of guy! It's a cool knife, but I can see that it's not really your style 100%. At least the customer likes it, and you know even more than before why it's important to follow your gut instinct/intuition when it comes to custom stuff. But, still a nice knife, don't get me wrong!

I really like it. I have found that it is tough to get a good overall flow when the blade length is shorter. Seems like if ya use a handle that will fit your hand....then the blade looks stubby.

This one looks cool......great knife!

Nothin' wrong with that one..........maybe ya oughta use plumbing fittings more often. ;) :D

Good to see you haven't lost touch with the nuts and bolts of knifemaking... :)

OK, that was bad, I guess I could do without the brass nut, but hey, if the owner likes it, thats what matters.

Brings up a good point though about when a maker gets a request to make something, at what point should he say: "No, I don't like it and won't make a knife like this with my name on it." Or, should he ever? I don't know.

My Friend, that is EXACTLY my sentiment. I don't know either...

If it looked absolutely horrible, it would be a straightforward matter. In this case the project the customer wanted was only "questionable" ... ;) Thanks again. Jason.
