Not sure what VG-10 is, other than sharp.

I've sharpened a few different steels with my DMT Aligner. D2, 154CM, S30V, Case's CV steel, and of course 440 and 8Cr13MoV. Mostly Benchmades a few Kershaws too.

I digress.

So I go to sharpen my only Spyderco, an Endura 4, for the first time this weekend. I just started with the green stone (Extra Fine) and then the beige (Extra Extra Fine) since it really wasn't too bad. I'm watching TV and have no idea how long I was actually working. I got a pretty good edge, almost mirror, so I stopped.

After I sharpen I always use a wad of paper towels to apply some Hoppe's Elite oil to the blade for storage. I done this lots of times with no worries.

Well, this time, the blade sliced through the wad of paper towels and started slicing my finger before I realized it. That's the first time that's ever happened.

I do believe this is sharpest I've ever been able to get a knife. Almost too sharp. Almost. :)

HAHA! I've done the very same thing with a SAK knife. So sharp you don't feel it one bit. I'm glad to hear VG-10 sharpens well, I hadn't had to touch my Superleaf yet, it is fairly new and hasn't seen much use so far.

You know your knife is sharp- when you cut yourself and dont feel any pain until you see the blood gushing out

I had this experience the first night I had my delica 4 FFG. I was at my computer fondling the knife when I dropped it onto my exposed leg. Made a nice slice into my calf which bled immediately and profusely. VG10 gets sharp. DAMN sharp.

I think VG10 is a very under appreciated steel. It's my favorite in pocket knives for the scalpel edge it will easily take.

I've also had VG-10 cut me to the bone without feeling a thing. Now I just feel pins and needles as it went to the bone, and thru a nerve in the process.

All via an Endura.

Okay, so does everyone with an Endura cut themselves without noticing?? Just 2 weeks ago I managed to cut the tip of my thumb off with my E4 and not notice until I started dripping :P

I did it with my FFG Endura as well. I am a little worried about the Waved Endura I have coming...

It builds character.

Yes, VG-10 takes a killer edge. I went to check My F1
by shaving a little spot on my arm and the blade just
stuck to my skin and took a couple layers off.

I'm always surprised when my new spyders don't take blood in the first week. I'm getting better at it.

Now first of all I love all the "Made In USA" blade steels like Crucible, Carpenter, Timken ect. >> But I'm coming to the conclusion that VG-10 is truly my favorite all purpose blade steel. There was an article in one of the past issues of "Tactical Knives" magazine which one of their well know writers/contributors stated that VG-10 in his opinion was the best overall blade steel.

There is also a "dependability" factor with VG-10>> I find it very dependable in harsh conditions and extreme cold weather. From what I learned in my original copy of that great book "The Spyderco Story" by Kenneth Delavigne is that VG-10 was made by a Japanese steel company for "agricultural" purposes but then like ATS-34's history went there were some knife makers that discovered VG-10 made an excellent cutlery steel.

If my memory serves me well I believe it was the Spyderco Moran fixed blade model in which they introduced VG-10 for the first time in Spyderco's line. The first Spyderco folder I had with VG-10 was the original C-54 big Calypso model. My current 3 favorite EDC folders I carry often are all VG-10 bladed models. And I got a feeling that VG-10 is going to be with us for quite a while to come. Because it would have to be one very good steel to de-throne it at this time.

Man that is gross ughh....damn son you cut yourself bad, I feel like a girl whining about my cuts now.

Wear it as a badge brother, wear it as a badge!

Yeah it happened quick and I posted a thread about it on the other Spyder forum. Long story short, it was my first wave knife, I was wearing new pants with weird pockets and my keys were on my belt loop on a carabiner and snagged on the knife pocket clip and managed to partially open it and when I went to feel my keys to see what happened it poked my good.

Didn't hurt but I knew what happened. Ran water on it and poured some liquid bandaid on it and wrapped it with about 20 band aids. When it instantly bled thru I knew it was bad. Took them off, saw the bone and decided going out for beers and a burger could wait a few minutes for some stitches.

The nerve damage it the only bummer. Numb finger and some random sharp pains here and there.

Character had.

VG-10 is one of my definite favorite steels. My experience is pretty similar to this thread's title. Super sharp, easy to sharpen, and [IMHO] very rust resistant!
