I am not a knife collector but thought you all may help .my father has a friend that has her fathers knife and have no idea where to start to get info.
I know it is old because the friend is almost 80.It is a camillus pocket knife and has the # 23 on it .any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

Welcome to the forum! Without a good picture of the knife and it's tang markings, it would be difficult for me to give you an approximate age for it. Perhaps one of the advanced collectors, or CAMCO or Phill, the moderators can. The best I can do is to give you an illustration of the #23 pattern from the 1973 catalog. I have no idea as to when the pattern was first introduced, or discontinued.

The tang is the portion of the blade next to the handle which usually bears the manufacturer's stamping. It contains information such as the manufacturer's name, sometimes the city and country of origin, and occasionally the pattern number. Sometimes the pattern number is on the reverse side of the blade tang. This example is an earier Camillus, stamped with one of their trademarked brands, Cloverbrand Syracuse U.S.A.. These stampings changed over the years, varying in text style, size, and content. These contain clues for a knowledgable knife enthusiast as to the approximate year of manufacture. A good flatbed scanner picture will work as well as a photo.

The model #23 knife has been made since after WWII. This knife was very popular with companies that produced felts (ORR FELT, Albany Felt, etc.) for the paper industry. Camillus would hot stamp the handles with the company's name and logo.
