I would like anyone and everyone's honest opinion. Kershaw Cryo or Ontario RAT-1. I need a medium duty, small-ish, Under $40 blade. Which would suit better?

Well the RAT 1 is an awesome knife but its a bit on the big side, for edc you might prefer the model 2 which is exactly the same just smaller. My vote is for the RAT though either 1 or 2, I've had the Cryo and like it but man I love the RAT, especially for the full flat grind.

I'm just worried about the AUS8.. I had a Boker AK47 that snapped with light use, and my 8cr13MOV Tenacious has taken ALMOST as much a beating as my S30V Manix.. But the RAT-2 does look pretty appealing.

The Boker was likely an anomaly. AUS8 and 8cr13mov is virtually indistinguishable.

The RAT-1 is a big knife. The Cryo is a small knife. If you don't care about the size, just get the one that looks better to you. Both are awesome.

If you're looking for something small-ish, then that'd be the Cryo. The RAT-1 is a nice knife, but it is definitely not small. The RAT-2 and Cryo are pretty close in size.

Honestly its probably just because it was Boker, I've never owned one but I have heard nothing but bad things about their quality. Also like calvin said AUS8 and 8cr13mov are very similar in terms of performance, the RATs will most likely hold up just as well to hard use as your Tenacious (though in fairness the Tenacious is considered one of the toughest knives out there).

I've never owned either Rat, but have heard plenty of good things about them. That being said, I've had my Cryo for months. I work behind the scenes at a college library, and the Cryo does a fine job for light to medium-duty tasks. It goes through boxes, packing supplies, zip ties and has held it's edge moderately well. I've even used the blade to start screwing some pieces of shelving down when my toolkit is being used.

I'm not afraid to push this knife thanks to it's sturdy blade profile. Plus I love the solid feeling of a frame lock; it just inspires a little more confidence. Not to mention the facts that it was designed by Rick Hinderer, and Kershaw has one of the best customer service/warranties around.

Those are just my 2 cents. I only have experience with the Cryo, so my opinion is very biased. As always, YMMV. Best of luck with whatever you decide on!

I was on my way to buying the Cryo one day, and just happened to stumble upon the RAT.. im fond of both, But honestly, I think i might go for the Kershaw. Thank all of you for taking the time to write a review and leave your opinions. And i might actually take up jimh0220's idea, and get the RAT-2 when i have the chance. Thanks again for the picture, It really puts it into perspective.

They're very different knives. Do you like flippers? How about assisted open? Those are major features you get w/ the cryo. Also you should definitely be comparing the cryo to the rat 2 and the cryo 2 to the rat 1. (funny how that works eh? :) )

I LOVED the skyline, Until i held one. Its nice, but.. the blade just doesnt look too appealing to me at all. And im used to the Spyderhole, but flippers are just as easy, and i have been comparing quite a bit lately, and guessing the cryo 2 is bigger? haha :)
