Recieved this knife last week and love it. I mean the lock up and blade shape and smoothness of flicking the blade open etc etc. Well what I was less impressed with was the D2 steel and my ablility to sharpen it. Until today that is. I had been sharpening it off and on and kind of experimenting with different types of sharpening devices and techniques and truthfully had it so it would somewhat shave hair and would very easily slice paper. But not like what I have head D2 can do. So this a.m. I once again broke out my diamond Lansky and decided that a lower angle of attack to the edge was called for.

I used the coarse hone only for this. I refprofiled the edge to a full 25 deg on each side. This is much shallower than the 30 deg it apparantly had. Didn't mark the edge or anything-did it by eye and had at it. Approx. one hour later I finally heard the sound that I wanted to hear and that is the unmistakeable sing of the edges colliding as they should when the proper angle is reached. You know it is something you feel too when using a system or fixture like this. It would very cleanly and easily shave hair now and cut newspapers with gentlest of nudges. Not only that but when the blade springs out of the clamp for whatever reason and cuts your index finger on the fly down to the bone and you don't feel like it is cut well the damn thing is beyond sharp. Of course after I stopped the bleeding and super glued the approx. 1" gash shut and put a large band aid on the wound I finished the edge on my white stone and the stropped it on my jeans. Incredible edge.

I should also mention that I had the knife apart when using the Lansky on it. Before when I sharpend it using this system I used two different edge angles on the guide to try and keep the original cantle to the blade. Now it is slightly and I mean slightly wider at the point than mid way down the blade so not very noticeable really unless looking hard. Very professionally done if I may so myself.:D So now that I have this the way I want it I may now be able to pay more attention to the BM CQC lg PE I just picked up! Y'all probably think I am nuts and rightly so I guess but a sharp ass tool is a happy tool. Keep'em sharp

Hi Longbow. Glad to hear you got that Maxx to the point you wanted it. D-2 is a great steel.

Wow, surprised it had a 60 degree included edge angle originally. Even 25 per side isn't all that thin, but I guess it depends on what you want to do with it.

i might get a cuda maxx for my dad. any problems with lockup & disengagement, or am i confusing you with someone else who posted a cuda thread? if you're the same person, did you get those issues fixed, & how.

Hi Alan. I don't belive I have any QC issues at all. A couple of my comments were that I experienced I believe what is referred to as titanium galling you just have to add graphite in one form or other-ie.) using a pencil on the locking part of the blade. This just makes it easier to disengage the lock instead of having it stick. Well mine is a used Maxx and not new so putting the pencil there would make it fail the spine whack test. It didn't fail all the time mind you but it did fail. I have no idea why being used would enter into the equation but figured I would mention it. It is in better condition than some trades/purchases I have made.

The other thing is mentioned in another thread. Sharpening D2 is a pain in the rear. I now have it what I consider sharp. It also pierces like no tomorrow. Point here is don't let it get that dull again, and I won't. As for the lock up issue it is a non issue. Believe it or not I put a bit of grease(tetra) on the back of the blade that locks and with this on there it did not fail the spine test. Go figure. I also think after fiddling with the knife for a week or so that how much tension you have on the pivot screw makes a difference somewhat too.

I am sold on the design and the manufacture of the knife. If you can't own a DDR outright this is definetly the next best thing and give it my whole endorsement for what it is worth. Keep'em sharp

Keep in mind that when you do the spine whack, you are holding the knife with your fingers out of the way of the blade, should it close. When you are using the knife, your grip will keep the Maxx's lock from disengaging.

I have the DDR and the Camillus and the difference in the blade itself is negligeable.

Yep, don't hold your fingers in the way of the lock or it won't disengage itself and you won't cut yourself. The knife is pretty big to begin with so where you have your hand when using the knife may or may not keep the lock from failing. Least ways that is how I see it. Had mine in my hand with it centerd sharp side up in my hand using my thumb and forefinger as the fulcrum. Also I found that when performing the spine whack test or lock up test, tap or hit the blade out towards the end towards the point. If it is going to fail this test it will fail out there due to the vibration that is set up through the blade more than anything else. So if it doesn't fail the test like that it is a winner. Keep'em sharp
