Last Sunday I was pleased to have in my shop Dylan Leary, an American who recently moved to Brazil and is very interested in learning how to make knives. We chatted a lot and ground some steel, too, and here is the result:

This knife is ground (both sides, not chisel) from a 5160 steel bar and is 8 3/8" long, with a 3 1/4" blade.
Heat treatment was done by knifemaker Ariovaldo Lopes in his shop and it has a very nice and visible temper line. The flats of the bar were left with its characteristc rough surface.
The handle is made of slabs of ipê wood cord wrapped and resin soaked.

Dylan has a good hand for knifemaking and a lot of will to learn so I believe we will soon be seeing some good stuff coming from him. Not to mention that he is a great guy, too!

Ivan; That is very nice of you to take a Non-Portuagee under your wing. :D
Tell him from me to keep up the good work. ;)

IG, as the great sacana that I am I have not told him wich side is the blade and wich is the handle...:D

Hehehehe!!!!! ;)
Ivan; to bad you couldn't make it up here to one of the Hammer-Ins. You would fit in with the rest of us Portaugees.  :D
