Notch for hidden tang

Good afternoon! Trying to make my first hidden tang knife, and have a couple of questions. When cutting the slot for a hidden tang knife in a piece of stag, do you guys use a drill bit, or cut the slot with a dremel or something. I take it if I drill a round hole that the spaces around the sides will be filled with epoxy. Also, how long should I leave the tang?

Thanks in advance!

It's best to remove as much of the porous marrow as possible as that is the weakest part of the antler. Then when you're assembling the knife fill the void with epoxy. You can cut notches in the tang to give the epoxy places to grip or even put short sections of pins thru the tang. I'd leave the tang as long and wide as possible. The more the steel you have the stronger the knife will be. Here's a link to a short picture tutorial I did on the subject.

drill holes the width of the tang. One, two or three holes side by side as the case may be. Use a drill diameter equal to the thickness of the tang.

Go to the hardware store and get one of those jab saws for sheet rock work. Grind the back of the saw down until you can get in stated in the tang kole to clean it out.

Keep the blade cool so the teeth will still be hard.

You can make em from reciprocating saw blades too if you wanna make handles for them.

The saw blade thickness needs to be the same or smaller than the tang thickness.

To use it stick the point of the saw blade in the tang holes and pull back, cutting/scraping the waste from the hole.

I got that Idea from Gene Chapman, he has a dandy book with all kinda tricks for making these knifes.
