Notch in the Vanguard

What is the purpose the notch between the sharp edge on the knife and the handle? I have noticed this on the Vanguard that I have (BTW I love this knife). I find it to be the ONLY fault in this knife. It is very annoying because small string and rope gets hooked. Is there a way I can modify the knife, or is there something that I don't understand. Thanks
 
I,too, have wondered about this. I agree it is a great knife, and I really like the textured rubber handles.
 
That relief gives the edger a starting position to sharpen. It eliminates the possiblity of gouging the choil while edging.

The first ones were a 90 degree angle but we altered that to minimize the issue you both described fairly soon after introduction.

If it is causing a problem we can round it a little more for you?
