I am in the process of making 4-5 knifes out of .250 S7, ranging from a HAK to a 8in blade hacker. Does any one know of any GOOD heat treaters in the Washington area? hopfully in or around Olympia. I'm hoping to find some one that does knives alot so they know what they are doing.
Thanks for any help you can provide.Hope I didnt miss this some where.

Also would they anneal the blade or would that be something I would have to do? What do you thing the cost would be for this also?

Let me know if you find anyone. There are guys in Yelm, Bothell, Walla Walla, and Bellingham (and others ) who are very good knife makers and have the equipment to heat treat. But I have not found anyone who is in the business of doing heat treat for others. Some are nice enough to help you out, but on their own schedule, as they are in the business of doing their own stuff too.

That might leave you waiting a long time when you may be anxious to get to the next step. I have decided to keep sending my knives to K and G. They do a good job and if you ship it mid-week they can get to it on the next Tuesday. At least until I get my own oven....

Good luck to you!

Paul Bos is awesome. If you send it to him, you'll be assured of a proper heat treat. He isn't in your area, and you'll have to ship it. But, it will be done correctly.

How would I go about contacting Paul Bos? I dont mind shipping my knives out, but I was hoping that there was a reputable heat place here in the greater olympia, tacoma area.

Here is Paul Bos' brochure:

Be advised that Paul typically charges to do blades in batches of 20. Sometimes he'll do individual blades for a price. "4-5 blades" will be expensive on an "each" basis. In other words, you'll need to contact him ahead of sending the blades.

Bear in mind, too, that Paul Bos will get your blades HT'd and tempered properly to the correct hardness. Depending on how you ground them, there could be some warpage. He'll do what he can to straighten distorted blades, but he can't work miracles. He's done this so long, we can rest assured that any warpage is pretty much our failure, not his.

Hope that helps.
