Hi all,

As I said nothing to fancy today.
Kelly Girl here in this pic.

and I went for a walk today. While Kelly Girl sniffed out rabbits next to the Tarped shelter I put up last Nov. Here is a pic of it on the west side of it.

I decided I wanted to fill up my tinder box( it had some fuzz sticks in there but I wanted to fill it to the rim so to speak lol) that I keep at my shelter area, with some more fuzz sticks that I had planned on making. But as I started to slice into the sticks I was carving I just decided at that monent in time to just make some shavings instead of making up fuzz sticks.

After I had carved up a nice pile of shavings I decided to put fill up my tinder box / Tin container that I keep my tinder and fuzz sticks in. In this pic

I have the pile of shavings and the sticks that I carved on, in front of the knife I used to make the shavings. Well I was able to fill my tin container up to full.

I had some extra left over shavings for starting a fire

IMG_0718.jpg

to sit by and saw up some wood with my hand saw for my wood pile.

My wood pile was looking a little depleated

after having some fires in the past.

After I sawed up some branches and added them to my wood pile. As you can see there is a few more sticks added to the pile. Just a few lol.

After I finished filling up my tinder box as I call it and adding more wood to my wood pile, I

just sat back and relaxed for the rest of the morning. The temps were in the 40s and the sun was shinning and warming the morning up, the birds were churping, kelly Girl was hollering the way beagles do as they look for rabbits. I was sitting by a small fire and eating beef jerky:D that I had brought for a snack lol. There was a lite breeze comming from the east.

At that time and while I sat there by my fire that was under my tarp and watched and listened to my suroundings. I was thinking to myself how right it felt. Just sitting and doing, well, really nothing fancy, just sitting by a small fire on a beautifull morning out in the woods here on the farm.

This is a memory that I will look back on for the rest fo my life.

Like I said this morning was nothing fancy, it was just a time in my life and I thought I would share it with you guys. I am sure some of you have experinced that right feeling too, at one point or another in your life.

Just getting out and practing some skills that I have learned over the years that I like to do when out in the woods, nothing to fancy, like I said. Just fun to do.

Well I hope you enjoy the pics and comentary of my morning today.

Take care all,

Bryan

Love it. I gotta find me a place like that, where I can just leave everything behind, even if just for a few hours.

Echo echo ecchoooooooo those feelings and thoughts!

It is such a cool experience and thank you very much for posting those pics and thoughts.

six shooter, thanks, Well as to the where to go and being able to leave the world behind for a few hours. I do not know what to tell you. Sorry :o
I just hope you are able to find it:D. And if and when you do post the pics:thumbup:

Rockywolf, Thanks. No DeWees knife today. I had a family member come to visit and well he bought it lol. So I have not made me another one yet.
But when I do it is going to look something like this one though.

I just finished this one thursday for a freind in Canada. he sent me some Elk antlers that he got from one if his Elk hunts and sent enough for me to do several knives with. I all ready have started on a Kephart and soon I will start on another DeWeese and then comes the E. Kreps knife design. I was going to do up a Nessmuk design knife too but I really do not care for that design like I do the other 3 designs. Anyways they will be for my private collection.

Franchise kid, LOL you are very welcome.

Take care all and thanks for the kind comments,

Bryan

You got yourself a great little hidey hole there Bryan.

Jeff

Hi Bryan,
Wow,what a great time! Thanks for taking us along. Nice shavings(isn't that your Whittler Knife?) and a ready to go wood pile! I see several nights and Bannocks in there.LOL I can alreadt smell the bacon!
All the Best,
Alex

jds1, thanks, It really is a pretty cool hidey hole area lol. A 1/4 mile from the house if you walk across a field to it. or about 1/2 mile if you take the woods all the way to it. I normally take the long way but on some mornings I will take the short cut lol just so I can get the bacon and the bannock cooking faster:D. Once that is done I will then take a walk along the creek heading north or south. At one point there is a creek that comes in from the east and Kelly Girl and I will go that way too. Just depends on what we want to do for that morning walk.
My little campsite sits between 2 hills and down in the valley of them. Unless you are in the air you will not see it from a road. It works for me.

Alex, thanks, Glad you liked the comentary. It sounds like you with me in spirit at least. I wish you could come here and sit and have a chat. We would cook up some bannock and bacon:thumbup:

Well as to that knife. No that is not a whittler. It is a knife design that
Jeff H. from here on the forums sent to me. Jeff was doing some drawing one day and sent me that design and said if I ever wanted to make one up do so and so I did.
I made it up for fun and use it it every once in a while. I made it about a year and a half ago.
It has a 3.5" long blade, a 4" handle, and is made out of 3/32" thick 0-1 steel. It does not really have name. I just call it a simple knife when refering to it. I never made for anyone else.

Take care all,

Bryan

Great pics Bryan! Nothing like just having a quiet place by a brook in the woods where you can just sit in peace and relax. I really like that little camp of yours!

Thanks Mistwalker, It is my little get a way so to speak. I tell ya, I wish every one had a little place like this to go to and relax and practice there skills.
The way life goes some do and some do not.

Bryan

Great pics. Just looking at them takes me away from all the current garbage going on here at the residence. Motivates me to see how badly I can butcher some wood trying to make shavings. Yours look as thin as paper, like someone took a mini-planer to some wood. Awesome looking set up. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Sicily02! Your post and pictures really resonated with me!

I now live within an hours drive of the Rockies west of Denver, and have access to some of the best camping and prettiest views in the US, IMHO. But my fondest memories are camping with some of my high school buddies along a river in eastern South Dakota in the summer growing up back in the 70's. It was the first time I'd ever gone camping, and an eye opener in many ways. I didn't know how bright a full moon was in the country until then. I also didn't know how much fun camping was until then.

We'd rig up half an Army pup tent for a lean to, make do with lousy sleeping bags, tell tall tales by the camp fire, had a great time in general. I wasn't old enough to drive, so packed everything on a bike to get out there...

Those early camping trips were the best I've ever had, and your pictures really brought back some memories. Thanks!

Hi all,

Thezenful1, Thanks I am glad to hear you liked this thread
I posted.
As to the thin shavings the mini Planner( Orange handled knife :D)
I used, is really ground thin towards the edge.

Sodak, Thanks. I am glad to hear that my thread, brought back some fond memories for ya. That was neat for me to read. Like you when I first started camping I and 2 others were like the 3 peas in a pod. We camped all the time and really had some great times. We hunted and trapped together also. I really miss them days. I do wish I could have had some of my gear that I have today, back then. I really like the boots I wear and the sleeping bag I have now, And the knives I use today just are such a pleasure to use. And the plants that I know, now, I really wish I had known as many as I know today back then. I also wish I could have the camera I have today back then lol. the camps and the things my 2 freinds and I made.

We camped many a night with tarps as lean-tos. I still camp like that today.
Tents were just not our thing. I always felt so closed in. I really like to see out and all around me. We used netting to keep the bugs away from us in the warmer months. and in the cooler months we stayed closer to the fire at nights lol. We 3 lived on farms and in a rural area( south east Neb.) so camping was just a natural thing we did when we got together on the weekends and during breaks from school.
Getting water and wood from the land and yea even some of our food by fishing and hunting. We would fish all year long and then when hunting season came we took full advange of that too.

Those were some grand times.

Take care all,

Bryan

Thanks for the pics. My brother in law and I are underway in making a little hidey hole place in a 18 acre woods close to home. When we get it livable I'll post some pics.

Your place is great to get away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Getting back to basics and relaxing is fun.

Hi all,

Ratamahatta, Thanks and yes I agree. Every one needs one of the outdoor spots.

Revolerman 357, You are welcome, Wow that is great that you are getting a place set up for you to have a place to go to and camp and practice your skills.

I can hardly wait to see the pics when you get it done.

Take care all,

Bryan
