Nothing Like a rainy day to accomplish my 2010 goal. I set a goal this winter to go out into the woods and make a friction fire from wood I find while out. Luckily I had good company to keep me motivated and offer encouragement in Resue Riley and Marcelo

We have had some unseasonable warm weather and some rain here as of late which melted all the snow. Today was a balmy 44F with rain. Luckily it didn't rain allot, but more of and off PIA drizzle... Either way everything in the forest was wet and promised to make fire starting difficult, and friction fire even more so..

Here is the beginning of the hike in to our spot

I don't think Riley gets out much

I busted off some wood from a standing dead tree(no clue what type) and here I am sawing a section for heart and spindle.

Riley put up a lil poncho shelter to keep the rain off me.

Everyone should have a bowdrill divot in their knife's handle..

It is hard to keep a straight face with Marcelo and Riley as company.

Big Mike showed up later as well

Sadie the Dog

We also messed around with some deadfalls. Yes this is a burning log. We like to insure death or at least 3rd degree burns..

Riley threw together a pauite utilizing Hemlock Root as cordage.

Deranged bushcrafter

We also messed around with the split stick bowdrill method. No luck with that, but got really close.

and we will stop with a look at the frozen lake which surrounded us.

Thanks for looking fellas.

great pics Tony... it's been dumping rain here the past 2 days.. they even shut down my boys school...:)

Great pics, and congrats on the fire brother.

Rielly is a crazy SOB. Must come from EMS. Were all a bit nuts.

Nice skills Tony, I don't know if most people know how hard it is to do what you did. If that makes any sense. Looks like it was a great time.

Great pics! How do you like that RC-5? Looks like someone put a new edge on it? Have you noticed much cutting improvement?

Thanks Mike, I bet there are no fires though:thumbup:

I can definately agree with that:thumbup: You both are good people though.(wow, I just complimented you:eek:)

The big guy in the pics(Big Mike) convexed it for me. It cuts 100% better now. I could easily use it as my only knife, but I prefer smaller knives with a scandi grind. However it is a staple on my pack, and a true work horse on wet days like this when you need to get inside wood for the dry stuff.

We spent the afternoon on a peninsula surrounded by a frozen lake.

Warm air over the ice raised a localized fog,

…like the setting of some long lost Twilight Zone episode,

...it seemed we where enveloped my some ethereal haze,

…from our vantage point nothing existed but this rain-soaked sector of terra firma.

A few photos of Riley and Tony at base camp.

And a few on the trail shots.

Big Mike

That's quite an acomplishment, especially in those conditions. Looks pretty wet out there.

Congrats Tonym, that is great doing it from scratch like that. I have to agree that a decent headpiece makes life easier. Also good idea on the tarp.

Love all those shots and it would have been fun working on the traps and such. Thanks for thread of your great day.

What's the story with that sweet spot overlooking the lake? That looks like an incredible place to camp/hang out, especially this time of year with nobody in sight.

You're absolutely right Jeff:thumbup: it is right on a peninsula of the lake and someone built that table you see in the pic. Probably a spot where fisherman pull there boat up, clean there catch, and have lunch. I have never seen another soul there during the week which is when I get out, but I know people use it. Luckily they keep it pretty clean. This time of year the trail heading to it is closed, making it a perfect spot not to be bothered by anyone. It would be a great spot to have an overnighter with a couple of people. But you would have to be dropped off, as a car in the parking lot will probably cause someone to come looking around...

Great trip report Tony. Hey John, nice Mora 2000 in the pic. How are you liking it?
