We are lucky enough to have a "China Marine", and WWII Vet here in Scottsburg. They're passing on rapidly. He always gets my 1st Happy Birthday. Respects to all here, and Happy Birthday! It is true; Once a Marine. Semper Fi!!

And I think of the 2nd Bn. 4th Marines quite often.

Now wouldn't that be something. A khuk Marines reunion.

Once a Marine. Semper Fi!

Oorah!

It seem like any time I see a story about Marines on TV, I hear this "Oorah". It reminds me of something I would hear from of a bunch of steroid necked football apes.

When I worked, and fought with Marines years ago, I heard them chant such things "Kill", "Beer", and "Going Home", but I never heard "Ooorah".

What is this "Oorah" business anyway?

In 1966, we never said it. But I have heard Lee Ermy say it on "Mail Call" on the History Channel. He was the drill sgt on "Full Metal Jacket".

I suspect it is something similar to saying "hooah" in the Army. And probably came in to use subsequent to my Marine days.

It be the Marine Corps battle cry. It can be used as many different forms of speech, such as the word "kill" as you say you heard a lot.

Oorah is the Marine Corps battle cry, and yeah, it's just like Hooah. Maybe it is a new thing but I'm in the DEP and hear it all the time at our little monthly gatherings. A friend that was in Parris Island last summer decided replace "OORAH" with "HURRAY!" on one occasion, it did not go over well with the DIs!

Here is a link to some commentary on the origins of "oorah".

oorah

and another

oorah

This expression came along after I got out. Gawd, I feel so old!!! :D
