i saw a post on another forum yesterday and they said ernie told them they are now again going to SS/ti liners w/the SS on the non lock side, and its non magnetic SS(303 IIRC?) so ya cant tell w/a magnet.

here we go again lol, i dont think it makes much difference in the performance but i would still prefer ti/ti myself given a choice.

i suppose ti is up again?

I don't mind if the liner is Ti or SS. The knife would be a little lighter with the Titanium, though.

Ugh! I want titanium on both.
I mean come on, titanium doesn't cost THAT much; just check out the prices for titanium sheets.
The labour costs WAY more than the tiny pittance to be paid out for titanium, and on knives over $200, slight price fluctuations shouldn't drive knife makers to switch to steel.
I know it doesn't affect performance, but it affects symmetry and looks.

Yeah but in Ernie's defense you don't own a company in California having to fork out big tax dollars just to keep your head above water. If that is the cost of still having Emerson alive and well and helps the bottom line then I say make em out of stainless I don't care. Chances are no one would know if they didn't say much anyways. When you consider that Buck moved out of California just to save money it makes you wonder if Ernie wouldn't be better off in another state also. California is so backwards on everything right now that I'm sure they are milking businesses and tax payers all over the state for every last penny they can squeeze out of em.

They are increasing tax by 1% next month. It's supposed to be "temporary" but I really doubt it will ever go back down. 9.5% sales tax in San Francisco :(

titanium is hell on the tools that cut it . maybe that is the cost issue .i hate working with the stuff.

The income tax was supposed to be temporary also and look how temporary thats been. How many generations have we had to deal with that now?

Ti is hard on stuff for sure. I hate the way it sparks to high heavens personally but I can't see dropping the use of it.

i think it has been that way for a while. i know 2004 still had both titanium

this is correct, then he went to the SS/ti supposedly on all of them but it was really mostly k'bits, then it was supposedly only k'bits and all the others were SS/ti again, now this lol, what i've heard anyway, on another forum a thread asked all with the SS/ti ones to post and it was mostly k'bits, it might have been all k'bits IIRC.

its really gonna be hard to tell on some models due to the SS he is using is non magnetic,

like i said imho its no big deal really but i would still prefer the ti/ti if i had a choice.

and of course this is production stuff only the customs are still & have always been ti/ti.

i called up emerson once and they told me the dual titanium was ceased sometime after 2004, i dont remember when exactly.
honestly, my new 2008 7A has the non locking ss liner(same thickness as the old liners were on my 04, but the titanium locking side is much thicker than they used to be. i really like how they do their knives now.

I have recently written to Emerson with the same question and here is what they answered to me:

Dear L. L,
We use one titanium liner and one stainless steel liner for all models of
our knives. We started to use stainless and titanium sometime in 2007. Some
models were titanium and steel combinations. Anything after 2007 is most
likely titanium and steel combinations.
On most of our knife models the titanium liner is .062 to .068 thickness.
Hope this answers your questions.

Best Regards,
Ernest R. Emerson

+1

Off topic: Beautiful state, but I'm making plans to move elsewhere. And it's not just the taxes; it's too darn crowded. I grew up in CA, but I lived in a really small town in MI for a while. After returning to CA, I decided I prefered somewhere more rural with open space (and lower taxes).

Back to knives: For anyone who wants an Emerson with Titanium, I recommend one of EKI's framelocks (either the HD-7, or CQC-12). They have been discontinued, there are still a few out there. The "12" is a large knife, but rather flat in the pocket. The HD-7 is about the same size as a regular CQC-7. Both have Ti on one side and G10 on the other. Really solid knives backed by a solid company.

IIRC both the HD7 & the CQC12 were also available with ti/ti handles but they are hard to find now, and expensive when ya do, i do occasionally see one though.............

Yeah, the Ti/Ti ones are my favorite Emersons. Tough to find, so I go to Ferrrk :D.

For those who don't know of him, Ferrrk on USN (honorable fellow, btw) does some excellent mods on Emersons and other knives. On my HD-7, he replaced the G10 slab as well as the backspacer with blasted Ti. I am unable to upload a picture but I assure you his work is top notch!

If going to SS means still having the ability of having new Emerson knives on the market then i'm for it, I prefer Titanium but I have no problem with SS.

Yeah, the CQC12 ti/ti is my favorite Emerson.

I went back and forth on it and went to a sebenza and other equivalents but I have come back to the 12. You just don't really feel like you can damage the thing. And it fits my hand better than any of my folders and most of my fixed blades.

I wish I had bought a couple, but I think it may have been the last or one of the last when Emerson was selling them.

Anyhow, if you can get one of these they are awesome.

Wait, I am an idiot. You have this already. Long time, bad memory.
