The link is here.

DENVER (Reuters) - A mountaineer pinned by a heavy boulder in an eastern Utah desert cut off his right arm with a pocketknife after he determined that was the only way he would survive, officials said on Friday. (see the whole story at the link).

Question begs to be asked,"What make/model knife did he use?"

Just in case we are ever in that same situation, shouldn't we have a blade up to the task. :(

Sort of suggests a completely new way to perform knife evaluations,eh? Perhaps this should be transferred to "Knife Reviews and Testing"

I cn see a whole new round of ads in the Blade magazines. No more knives piercing solid steel, no more slicing up a windshield... we are talking about limbs here.

And hey! Let's not forget those requirements to become a "master bladesmith" -- forget about slicing through hanging rope and torquing the blade 70 + degrees... we are talking about limb ampuitations in a single swoop.

Yiikes, I just realized how tacky that sounds. Oh well, post it anyway.

I certainly feel very bad for this fellow in Denver.

That seriousness aside and now commenting on the quote above by “fracmeister,” I think that Cliff Stamp can offer the knife community a service here. The only drawback for Cliff is that the test would need to be repeated with various knife types and blade materials. Unfortunately, he would need to limit his tests to FOUR! Unless he could find some volunteers to do limb-matching.

GROAN!

Geeeesh Ron.., puuuuuulease don't give him ideas....lol...

I don't think I can take a "Physics Graph" that builds in all the factor analysis necessary for whacking through the humerus, radius, and ulna...
