Now here's an interesting Spyderco!

That's just silly. Fixed blade with blade guard instead of sheath. Why not just a folder? Oh...forgot....not strong enough. Especially for the heavy uses of a three inch blade.

Why not? I like the looks of it and I can’t wait to see the one that Spyderco is sending for the passaround (stay tuned to the Passaround forum, I will post the sign up thread as soon as I have it). There are times when I would like to carry a small fixed blade but I don’t want to bother with a belt sheath. The Vagabond looks like it could be carried in a pocket.

Fixed blades are fun

This thing is quite inexpensive too.... knifecenter isn't exactly known for its low prices and this guy is only going for 29.95 there.

I'm liking the look of it. Can't wait to hear from spyderco about it.

I agree, but then I don't think Sal would just get a wild hair up his butt and just toss something freaky onto the market and hope for the best. I'm sure he designed it to fill a particular need or at the request of fans...

...unless he's getting old and senile. :D

whether its the best solution or not, I think its great to see the company taking new design stances. Spyderco has always been pretty revolutionary I think.

I think it is an interesting design. No pivot to gunk up. A retractable sheath to protect the edge and your fingers. Throw it in your tool box and don't have to worry about losing the sheath. Hose it off. Priced right for a light use utility blade for the dirty jobs.

I kind of like it. I've grown to love knives with small blades and large user interfaces. I am curious what kind of tang it has though.

I for one think it's a damn innovative idea! A small fixed blade that you can throw in your pocket without a sheath...

As always, it's typical Spyderco fugly, masking a beautiful user knife. :p

My (opinion only) is that Spyderco has reached that enviable place where it will sell because they "have" it.

The argument of no problems with the pivot will probably just shift to problems with the pivot of the ...........whatever you call the swingy part that covers the edge of the blade.

I like fixed blades. I even like LITTLE fixed blades. And big handles are good, too.

But this one leaves me cold. I can see pockets sliced open from an "improper" or imperfect closing of the gizmo part allowing the blade to ride down that seam like a ski.

It may be great. But I can't see a use for it that wouldn't be better filled by a good folder or a small fixed blade with some snap-on cover that covers the WHOLE blade. I just see things that could go wrong that may or may not transpire.

But......as always...... the market will tell us if it is an acceptable design.

 :)

it reminds me of the AG Russell Hunter's Scalpel (see picture)... it's considerably bigger tho...

Hunter's Scalpel
1-&-3/4" blade + 4-&-1/4" overall, 8A steel, Zytel handle, comes with sheath + lanyard... $19.95...

Spyderco Vagabond
3" blade + 7.8" overall, 6A steel, reinforced nylon fiberglass handle, comes with hinged blade guard... $29.95...

In the 80's they had a fixed blade with a spring loaded plastic guard that poped back at the touch of a button. " The legal auto knife" but it was to big for a pocket knife and lacked a way to tote it on a belt so it bombed. :barf:

well I'll probably be buying one. I really like the looks of it. I want to know more about the guard first though. I wonder if it has any way to keep itself over the blade, like maybe some sort of friction snap...

Now that sounds very cool. Imagine a small fixed blade knife that you can clip in your pocket like a folder. Granted, it would be a small fixed blade (2 1/2" or so). But the idea of simply pulling up on the handle touching a button would give you a fully functional, strong, fixed blade knife is very cool.

Nice design. I bet it would make a handy bird and trout knife. P.S. for those that like the attacted blade guard concept, check out the BenchMark SOS model(Bear MGC now makes a model of that knife). Same concept, a little differently done.
