Aldo's online store was still down when I got paid and seeing as it was 3 in the morning I didn't think I could order by phone so I took a chance ordering from Jantz (knifemaking.com) this time until I need a larger quantity... alas...

My order:

15" tongs
1/4 1075 bar stock
400 grit sandpaper

What I got:

No tongs

pieces of bar stock labeled "1095 (1075) hi-carbon" with my online receipt showing the item number for 1075 and my paper receipt showing the item number for 1095

a lot of 100 grit sandpaper

the sandpaper is fine.. i sent them a complaint email about the missing tongs before I even noticed the stickers on the pieces of mystery steel

This is my first time ordering anything from Jantz, are they often this bad? they literally got every item on the order wrong

Jantz is usually pretty good. I believe the only carbon steel in 1/4" they stock is 1075.

Though I don't buy my steel from Jantz, I have ordered from them many, many times. I think only twice there was a minor mishap but they were very easy to deal with and made it right quickly.

99.8% of the time, my order is right on and shipped very quickly. A polite phone call or email will resolve your issues in short order.

You seem to be right

Only 1075 and 5160 in 1/4" thickness

Is this probably 1075 then?

it matches the item # on the website for 1075 .. paper invoice says 1095.. the sticker (pictured) says both, but it is indeed 1/4"

I guess I'll take my chances on the steel and just focus on getting the tongs they charged me for.. perhaps I just got unlucky this time

I order a lot of steel from Aldo but I do order supplies from Jantz too..Jantz has always been vey good for me, the one time shipping was delayed they called me direct to explain the wait..Tracy over at usaknifemakers is great too..
Im sure jantz will make it right one way or the other..

I don't use Jantz that much anymore, but they always did fine by me. I will say that product sticker is a head-shaker, though...

I would call this quite atypical of them.

Like most other replies, I've only had good dealings with Jantz - your issue seems unique. I'm sure they'll fix it if you call them

I've done business with Jantz many times - they're usually very good. This is a blip - they'll make it right, I'm sure

I do about half my ordering from them and they have had that 1075/1095 listed that way for nearly a year. I figured it was a typo but the label really gets me wondering, what the heck is it? The seem to mostly sell O1, 1095, and 5160.

On my first order ever for knife making supplies they didn's ship me my steel because it was out of stock. I wasn't exactly happy because they didn't offer to ship it for free, they just didn't charge me and told me to order more and pay shipping when it was in! No good when the whole point of the order was to get a piece of steel to start on.

I think they should have stepped up like usaknifemaker does every time and sent it free priority shipping. They were short one belt on a huge order and sent that $3 belt with the $5 shipping just to be fast. They are now my go to supplier, I just ordered my steel from Aldo since they don't have much of the steel I want.

Now with every order I tell them to contact me if anything is out of stock and have had great luck with them getting everything right. :D

It doesn't matter for me anyways.. I always need to put in an order to get things done it seems. :)

This is probably some of the Hi Kwality CH1NA steel

I ordered some. Seems like steel to me, but what do I know...

I remember back in the ole days when you could actually call Jantz and dicker with them on some prices and they had $6 shipping on everything they sold lol I don't buy much from them anymore because I use Tracy, Pops and Sheffield's although it's been over a year since I ordered supplies. Is Sheffield's still open?

I ordered a piece 1/4 1095 awhile back and have never used it, I just looked at it after I saw this post. The same exact sticker! I just got off the phone with a rep from Jantz, and they say it is 1095. I informed them that someone else had recieved the same thing after ordering 1075, and she stated it is not 1075 ( item # XH1620).

I like Jantz, but i always call and talk to someone and go over the order very well.Never had a problem.I dont trust this new internet thing.:D

Partially resolved, I emailed them and they shipped out the missing tongs priority

Thanks for the info SGTcarbine.. I'm not sure if my canola & mcmaster 11 sec will be fast enough for 1095 so I guess ill set these pieces aside for now
