I just got off the phone with a really nice woman at Spyderco, i was inquiring how much it'd cost to refinish/refurb my used Dyad Jr i just bought yesterday, and we got to talking about this perfect little pocketknife, i said i was dissapointed that Spyderco discontinued it...

she replied that she was too, i asked why they'd discontinue such a perfect little knife....

....apparently S&W released a similar knife and Spyderco hadn't patented the design of the Dyad, apparently S&W was in the process of patenting their *ripoff*, even though Spyderco produced the Dyad series *before* S&W produced their ripoff, so Spyderco just decided to retire the Dyad series and let S&W have the design

that pisses me off, an inferior competitor causing a great knife series by a *superior* manufacturer to withdraw their *better* knife

i was planning on picking up a S&W knife at some point, for a beater, but no more, not only am i boycotting S&W knives in protest, i will not buy any S&W firearms either, and i was planning on picking up a .45 or .44 Magnum at some point, when i do, it *won't* be a smith product, thats for darn sure...

That's a shame about the Dyad, but let me tell you about S&W -- they aren't responsible for the irresponsible behavior of the knife manufacturer using their name.

Many companies sell their brand name to be put on knives or radios or t-shirts and then lose all control over the quality, which unfortunately reflects back on them.

S&W was owned by a British company. They got themselves a bad enough reputation with the knives being inferior, and made it worse by signing off on the Clinton gun proposals. Sales slipped so badly, they sold the company to an American group.

Do not blame the current American owners for the former British owners' mistakes. :D

I don't see how the makers of S&W knives could patent it.

There is already providence. And, its not like Spyderco was the first to use that particular concept. If they were, I'm sure Sal would have patented it himself; he appears to mingle a love of knives with business accuemen very well, and patenting the idea would have made business sense.

Taylor Cutlery who make S&W knives are terrible in my book. I e-mailed them a question about getting a replacement thumbstud for my framelock swat knife and still no reply. that was over three weeks ago. I'm glad that is the only S&W knife I own, I will not be buying any more

I thought I remembered hearing talk about the dyad being brought back on the spyderco forum, but only vaugely so maybe its just wishful thinking.
