Well, I think I finally know what you all mean when you say "hair-popping" sharp. I'm thrilled to report that I have finally achieved that badge of honor when you slide the edge of YOUR freshly-sharpened knife across the top of your forearm from elbow to wrist and the hair just flies off. Thanks to the information on this board, FAQs, and the general commentary, I feel less like a KnifeToad. I know I have much more to learn about sharpening, and knives in general, but this board and the people who participate on it are truly RAZOR, HAIR-POPPING SHARP! Now that my BuckLite 442 is popping, it's time for my new Benchmade 730 (and the rest of the knives in the house) to follow suit. Thanks!

So, what'd you use to sharpen it? Sharpmaker? Free-hand method? Did you strop the blade afterwards? Details!! I need Details!!

Matt, Thanks for your interest in the details! Actually, and don't laugh, it was a LANSKY FOLD-A-VEE which did the deed. Now, I swear it took NO LESS than 300 swipes EACH SIDE to bring out the infamous wire. Which, by the way, I doubted would ever appear until I busted out the old magnifying loop and the microscope I had as a kid and started seeing the edge curling over! I then pushed the wire from side-to-side a bit then lightened the strokes. A few reverse-stroke strops on a piece of cardboard seemed to straighten things out. I've been ghosting this board for months gleaning tons of knowledge and I have to say I'm stoked that my little old Buck sharpened up so nicely. I can't wait to grab my Dad's ol' Old Timer folder and whip an edge onto it! I never really appreciated a sharp knife until now and I'm afraid I'll not accept less than sharp ever again. You all have raised my standards. Oh, and I'm afraid I do now have an upgraded LANSKY ordered and on its way as well as a CRKT Point Guard. Whatzup with this knifebug thing? :-)

Wow! First post and it's a bookmark.

I've often said that the most important sharpening tool is a jewler's loupe so that you can see what's going on.

Thanks for posting this. It shows very nicely that wonderful results can be achieved without exotic tools if you just know what you're doing and pay attention to it.

KnifeToad, I, too am new to the Forums and have learned so much from the FAQ's and many posts. Until 3 months ago I didn't really pay much attention to my knives. Now ALL the knives in my house are very sharp, and I keep buying knives at the rate of about one a week! I use a DMT aligner w/ 4 diamond stones, a Sharpmaker and I've been useing the Norton 8"x1"x2" 2 sided india stone more and more. I also got an optivisor (like a hat with a flip down magnifier) to see the wire edge form, then I strop on an old police duty belt charged with with green chromium oxide CAUTION: This hobby is Very addicting!
