. . . and I know you'll have plenty of suggestions.

Right now, my only decent fixed blades are my wonderful Bark River Mini Canadian and my Becker Crewman BK-10. So you can see my problem; the Mini C is a great edc, but I wouldn't want it for my only fixed blade in anything other than the tamest campground camping situation. The Becker is excellent but excessive for me. I find it to be a bit of an overkill most of the time. Most of my outdoor activity is light hiking, woodsloafing, occasional backpacking and lots of motorcycle touring/camping. I don't hunt regularly, so that's not a factor in selecting a knife.

I've been reading with interest the Falkniven F-1 posts lately, and I think such a knife would suit my uses. I'm not sure I want to spend that much though. Are there similar knives closer to th $50 mark?

I'm considering Moras too; can someone describe the differences between the Clipper and 2000? I don't really understand the edge profile of the 2000 from pictures of it. Also in the Scandi category, I saw a post recently of the Helle Odel that I can't get out of my mind . . .

Another Bark River would be great, but I'm trying not to spend too much. I'm thinking of maybe trying to trade my Becker for something, since I don't really use it a lot.

Cold Steel Master hunter in C-V.

1. Grohmann #3/#1 (boat knife/original)
2. Rat 3/5
3. TAK I
4. many styles of mora (clippers a plain jane-mora 2000 has some spunk)
5. Sog Field pup

Here's the answer I gave a while back to a similar question:

I bought both recently (Carbon steel clipper, and Mora 2K). They are two very different kinds of knives. Both of them arrived sharp, however after a quick touch up with some #1000 git wetdry, the Clipper is now the sharpest knife I have ever handled. Either knife will easily push cut paper, and both will shave hair. However, the clipper will shave arm hair with a single smooth motion and removes it like a disposable bic razor. The clipper has a needle fine point that while amazingly sharp, I just can't help but think is a point of future failure. The point on the 2K is wider and tougher. The handle on the clipper is more pleasing in the hand seems to allow better fine control of the blade. The 2k handle fills your hand more and can be gripped from just about any angle. Both offer excellent retention.

The sheath on the 2K is nicer looking than the clipper, however the fact that the clipper can be "clipped" over a belt without having to remove the belt is a really nice feature. The 2K shealth is designed so it can be worn left or right sided without any bias. The Clipper is definately designed for righties.

The Clipper will easily strike sparks off the spine with a ferocium rod, the 2K's spine has the edges rolled, and it's next to impossible to use it to strike sparks unless you plan to file it flat.

In hand the clipper feels more like a precision tool, the 2K feels beefier and more like an all-around tool.

If I had to take only one, I would take the 2K. It gives me a psychological feeling of security. However, that said I plan on carrying my 2K on my belt and my clipper "Clipped" to my pack. Both are lightweight and really don't see any reason not to carry both. I would feel totally comfortable with either as my primary fixed blade.

I just ordered an f1 2 days ago. havent gotten it yet...i paid 78 bucks for it I'll let you know if its' worth it (can't wait)

2nd the Field Pup. It's a great little knife for the price.

I also would HIGHLY like to recommend picking up a mora or two. Get a clipper and a SWAK and see which one you like better. Onscenetactical makes nice sheaths for them, I just ordered one of each and they are great. Careful though, moras are addicting! They are just so useful and inexpensive, you'll have to keep buying more. I started with two and now have eight, and I'm sure you'll find people here that have two or three times that many!!!

I don't think you should have any problem staying under $50 for a solid 4-5" blade knife. Some people will tell you that spending $200 on a Busse is the only way to go, but it's not neccessary. I don't want to start an argument here, Busse's are top-notch knives, but for most of us we can get by with something much less. Good luck!

Forget the Clipper. If you want a Mora knife, get a Mora 2000 or buy the Mora #2 that has a 4.25" blade of laminated carbon steel. The Mora #2 is the same knife that Mors Kochanski uses.

This guy tends to have some good prices on them and a good selection of stuff. He also sells the bare blades without sheaths or handles so you can make your own. He also has the sheaths, bare fire steel rods, etc/

He has the Frosts Mora #2 with the laminated carbon blade for $15. It has a full length rattail tang, much better than the clipper, way stronger, and it has a 4.25" blade of laminated carbon steel that has a center layer tempered to Rc61-62, which is probably the best blade you can get on a Mora.

The Mora #1 is essentially the same knife but with a 3-7/8" blade instead of a 4-1/4" blade and it's $1 cheaper. I'd get the Mora #2 unless there are legal problems with carrying around a blade that's a bit over 4".

Spend the extra few bucks and get the F1. You'll love that knife.

I second the second on the F1.
It's a knife that your great grand children will inherit from you and it will still be useful. The red handled Mora on the other hand is nothing I would bring around, it almost scares me. I have used them since I was a kid, my grandfather had old ones lying around but my mother deemed them too dangerous and gave me a plastic handles Mora with the spur finger thinghy. Its a beat and bend and break knife. An F1 is a nice cutting tool.

I do not know what tools you got already, but I myself have the F1 either in a neck sheath or a modified zytel sheath with an added firesteel :)
I also bring a LM Fuse and either an axe or a Laplander saw.
The most popular trio combo is a Gransfors axe, a F1 (or H1) and a LM Wave (the old one).
Just remember that there is something very dangerous with Fallkniven knives... they bring with them the Fallkniven virus and its very contagious. When you get the F1, you will soon get the S1 and the A1 and the WM1 and the H1 and then your stuck with the heavy drugs like the NL and TK series knives :) Finally you have one of each and can't leave home without one :)

The F1 is almost a "big" knife in Europe, and "small" in the US. When I brought my S1 people around me looked like I was nuts bringing a "murder-death-kill-sword". The F1 is not big in size, but when "medelsvensson"- Average Joe is going into the forest to pick berries or mushrooms they usually dont bring a $100 knife but dull $2 pearing knives or a red Mora.

Get yourself an F1, and then the other Fallknivens. :) Good luck.

F1 is a great one for sure. Also you can occasionally get a used Bark River Northstar in the 75 to 80 price range and it is a damn good blade too:thumbup:

Pitdog,

That's a nice looking knife! You know what I like about it?? It doesn't waste EDGE by putting a choil notch thingie on the blade. The notch is where it should be IN THE HANDLE:thumbup:

I'd hold on to that BK10 since they don't make them anymore. Then just add in a smaller knife like the one pitdog posted above.

. . . and I know you'll have plenty of suggestions.

Right now, my only decent fixed blades are my wonderful Bark River Mini Canadian and my Becker Crewman BK-10....

What's wrong with the mini Canadian? If I woke up in the middle of nowhere and that was my knife, I wouldn't cry!

Buy a mora clipper and see how you like it. It's a knife that can go in your toolbox, tackle box or survival kit of you don't want to carry it in the woods. It wont give any advantage over the mini Canadian (4.25" blade, right?), other than you won't mind abusing the mora.

Other options? I would get a nice little folding saw or a small hatchet/axe. With a small SAK, the Bark River, the Becker and a saw or hatchet, you could do it all-- not that I would carry ALL of them at the same time. :D
