Heard on NPR yesterday, Scotland has outlawed swords. Swords and machettes are verbotten altogether, and you'll now have to buy knives from a licensed seller who will take all your personal information to give to the feds. That's paraphrased, but it's what they said. Whoever they were interviewing thought that was a good deal. He said there were 72 fatlities caused by knives last year (! :jerkit:) , and only eight caused by handguns (handguns are illegal too). I guess the message is by outlawing knives they can reduce the number of fatalities derived from them to a single digit. Next, baseball bats and screwdrivers...

Sad but substantially true.
There is a problem with knife crime in Scotland, largely gang/drug/alcohol related and like most politicians they go for an easy target.

I know a couple of Scottish policemen, and like most LEOs they enforce the law, not make it.

I live in the Highlands and camp in a hammock in some of the forests here. My brother, not a knife person by any means commented on a knife (an Al Mar SERE2K as it happens) "If you go out with that, you're sure to be lifted." I said that if a policeman was going to lift me for that, he'd be rather more likely to lift me for the Small Forest Axe in reach on my pack.

Being as I'm not likely to be lifted for anything (not in fights, dodgy pubs, don't profile like a ned) I carry largely what I want. If I was going into town, I'd probably either carry a Spyderco UKPK or a SAK.

Minding your manners does have a way of keeping one out of trouble. :)

They've implemented the ban in Australia too. A great friend of mine is a cop there, and he largely approves of it. I do not understand that.

I figure if there's some crazed druggie out there with a weapon, I want a bigger one - I'm not going to go running to the police to save my ass. If someone wants to hurt me or my family they might get it done, but one of us will be leaving the scene in a body bag. At least until they outlaw weapons in the US too.

Anecdotally, I used to live in the US Virgin Islands. Guns are illegal there. While I lived there 12 people were killed with firearms in 18 months. None of the victims, being honest citizens, were armed. That's no life for a free man.

This is not judgmental about any country or its citizens. It's not even representative of how an increasing number of Americans feel. Just my thoughts.

The Scotts have such a long and rich history interwoven with wonderfull tales of there battles, fought with axes and blades. They were a formidible foe, with their painted bodies and blood thirsty screams.

It strikes me as "unScottlike" to take away their historic arms. Will they settle their differences, now, with wet towels, spitballs? Not the same as the old broadaxe. Just not the same sence of machismo. Where lies the honor in a duel of words. Hell, we have that here on the Blade Forums. Give me a nice mace anytime.

hey I'm a bit Scottish and like to let out blood thirsty screams now and again
like now looking that this thread.. :grumpy:

gee gads what are they all thinking..or not???
the bad guy will just not turn theirs in,, this is a black and white thing with the government if passed, if caught with it you're in the wrong, this is good in a way
because it will be a reason to lock up the bad guy caught with it,, but it also punishes the innocent law abiding public..
and we are the ones that put the government in power to make these laws (for us)
I don't blame the police not wanting knives out there, but they are dealing with the population that will be carrying them law or not.. your seeing a trend,, when guns are out of the picture, ( never will be), then it's knives that get picked up and used, when the knives are out of the picture ( never will be with the bad guys), it will be more 2x4's used to kill and maim with,,,, then what? High heel shoes.. it's all a lame fix to a problem that's being looked at backwards in the way it needs fixing..
hey bad guys,, 2x4's are cheap if you want to keep your knives, use 2x4's, don't be stabbing your rivals anymore,,you're making the statistics look like the good guy is the bad guys here...

..education and awareness needs to be out there to help ,, I think in Texas they still want you to carry. It may be wrong now..but I think it was the way at one time not so long ago..

who will rob you knowing your have a gun on you or in your house ?? man, I mean even a beware of dog sign works. if you need a permit so be it, the bad guy has less chance to be getting a permit , with background checks..I have one and don't mind the check...the up side if the bad guy gets caught with a gun with no permit lock him up..hey we the tax payer foots the bill anyway..

if I get robbed at knife point and get stabbed
why should I not have been able to protect my self and possibly die with out being able to protect myself ,
the governor or who ever that is making the laws
doesn't care, he's not there to see it happen to the tax payer..if he does care it's pressure for a quick fix they don't know how to handle..
I wonder, do bad guys pay taxes??do they even care??
even Boxers are matched up before a fight, why can't I be matched more equaled to the guy that wants to kill me or rob me.. isn't that why he is using a gun in the first place,, to have power over me? take the power away from them..by arming ourselves..
why do the police carry guys,,, is it to over power the good people of the USA.. I think not...

this crap is being handled in a real bad direction... JMHO

I'll have to agree with you Dan. Rite now I'm in Perth waiting to head to the rig tomorrow. I've spend a week here and while it's a beutiful country and I love it here I can't wait to get back home. I haven't carried a knife the hole time hear and it feels like I'm nakid, especialy when I go to open a package or some other minor chore that I'd normaly use a knife for. Frustration doesn't begin to cover it. Sad thing is were headed in that direction ourselves. Talked with a cab driver and he was asking all kinds of questions on firearms laws in the US and cost of living and buying a place. Sounds like he was about fed up with the BS laws too. Which is a shame as Australia is a very nice place.

This is a shame. What would a reasonable lawmaker do? Not outlaw carrying a pocketknife, and I won't even go there about The US 2nd Ammendment RIGHT!
What would the Clans have done in history without edged tools/weapons?
Slapped each other Silly?
One of my Granparents, David Mcelreath Boyd was born in Scotland, Grandmother's parents were Lewis heritage.
They would all be shocked beyond belief to hear something like this about their ancestoral land.
Dog-gone It some things are just NOT right.

By the way Dan, on occasion, I let out a blood-"letting" scream but usually after hitting a kniuckle on a fast moving 36 grit hogging belt.

I used to live in the UK and Australia -and can tell you there's no place like home! Damn it's great to be an American!

Whatever the heavily armed British soldiers to them to. Been a L.E.O. for 21 years and my experience with laws of this type:thumbdn: .

... or to be more accurate, they'd have done whatever the other heavily armed Scots, English or mercenaries told them to [Scots are British, too, since the Act of Union
]

That is really sad given their history. Old clansmen are undoubtedly rolling over in their graves. Another sad day for knife owners, and a victory for the big brother sheeple wussies.
