I can't seem to make up my mind on what I want to sharpen with. A long time ago I picked up a 800 grit water stone but never really used it that much, the other day I found it very usefull working on a recurve blade and scandi so I decided to get some more. I picked up a 8000 grit stone at a local store the other day and was amazed at the finish it produced so I decided to order a few more grits online that night. I like the feel of the water stones and the finish that they produce but I am now starting to question their effectiveness. After finishing a CPM-D2 blade on the 8000 stone I was shocked to see that it felt over polished but at the same time it was clean shaving hair and push cutting paper though it would not whittle hair.

Is there a problem with using water stones and new steels?

Did I miss the memo? :foot:

Any tips or tricks anyone want to share?
