Hi all, thanks for everyones help over the last few days helping me choose a folder for my first (of many it looks) quality knife.

I today received my large CRKT 'Urban Shark' plain blade - all I can say is WOW - I wasn't aware that such quality of manufacturing can be had for only £30 ($40) - and to think that this is still compared to what you guys have, at the very bottom of the line!

What exactly is that paracord lanyard for then?

Can I expect it to 'slacken up' with use whilst still having no blade wobble?

Can that level of sharpness be achieved home sharpening?

I've now got my eye on a CUDA EDC by D Ralph but as I have pointed out earlier in the week - it appears the only way is to get one shipped from the US. If this is the case do you guys know which supplier is my best option for service and price (as a large proportion of the cost will be the carriage)

Is the Smith & Wesson SWAT knife a good blade?

Many thanks for you help.

Wacjac

While I would never suggest flouting Customs laws, you might be able to make a friend in the States who would send you knives as a "gift" in which I believe there would be no charges.

While I don't know exactly how sharp your CRKT is, you can probably make it just as sharp with a good stone and some practice. I've managed to put "hair-flinging" edges on some blades, and it's especially easy when you start with a relatively sharp edge that just needs a little bit of help

I do not hear good things about the Smith and Wesson folder. You might try doing a "search" in the archived General Discussion Forum, I think there have been a few threads on their quality.

Hello Wacjac, I too carry a CRKT Urban Shark.
It's one of my favourite carry knives. The lanyard is decorative, but also aids in retreiving the knife from your pocket if you prefer not to use the clip. The AUS6 blade should prove to be easy to sharpen when the need arises. Also, you can adjust the tension on the blade, but you'll need a #8 torx key.

Smith&Wesson would be a big step backwards from the CRKT and EDC.

I would strongly recommend that you buy one of the limited-edition EDCs with a 154CM blade from this forum's sponsor, the One Stop Knife Shop (www.1sks.com). The 154CM version only costs $15 more than the 420HC, but you get a vastly superior quality of blade steel for your money. I recommend 1SKS not only because they have exclusive rights to the limited edition, but because they are good folks with excellent customer service and very reasonable rates.

Wacjac, congratulations on the Shark. Enjoy it.

The lanyard is for looks, and light utility – an extra way to grab hold of a knife. It can be opened up to make a wrist loop if you are using the knife in a hazardous environment, like where it could drop overboard! To restore the lanyard, and see how you could adjust it, see Chris Reeve’s instructions.

To keep your knives sharp, the best overall system is the Spyderco Sharpmaker. If shipping isn’t prohibitive, Bayou Lafourche has a great price of $42.49.

Sharpening, of course, is one of the great questions around here. We probably could use a whole forum devoted to it. But the Sharpmaker is inexpensive, easy to use, and very effective. You can work your way up from there, but will always find it handy.

Wacjac, Smith & Wesson knives do not have a good reputation. Taylor Cutlery, who manufactures them are notorious for ripping off other maker's designs and producing cheaply made folders like the Cuttin' Horse line. I have recently seen ads for the HRT folder (Hostage Rescue Team) which acknowledges Darrel Ralph as the designer, but I haven't seen the actual folder yet and I don't know if it's actually manufactured by Taylor Cutlery. This is the first time I've seen Smith & Wesson actually credit a reputable designer with a knife, but only time will tell if their reputation will ever improve.

Wacjac, glad you liked your Shark. As someone (who's name I've forgotten) pointed out already OneStopKnifeShop.com is the only place to get the 154cm EDC from, if you want the cheaper 420HC version then I'd recommend getting it from Bayou LaFourche, and indeed, why not treat yourself to one of those excellent Spyderco Sharpmakers whilst
you're at it.

Welcome to the CRKT and Shark/LUS fan club!

Not too long ago on another thread, someone pointed out that CRKT's quality is just plain good. Not just "good for the price." Another forumite related that a dealer told him that he checks all the knives he sells and that CRKT is at the top of the list in terms of quality. He has to send back more specimens of all the other "better" brands.

IMO, one of the chief values of the LUS is the way such a relatively small knife fills the hand so well. Lightfoot obviously knows what he is doing! And, like yours, mine was extremely sharp out of the box. I carry the LUS as an offside, backup piece, though will almost certainly replace it with a Spyderco shortly. Have fallen under the Spydie spell,

but will never stop being a diehard CRKT fan.
