Hey guys
At this piont Iv'e pretty much settled on a schrade #165 fixed blade, a victorinox Farmer and a GB mini axe. I know many of you carry something similar.
My question is how do you carry them?
The guys that favor the large fixed blades often have sheaths with aux. pouches for carryng Misc. gear and a smaller blade but you guys that prefer a small axe and knife combos usually just show pictures of the knives and axe by themselves.
So how do you carry them? Axe in your BOB, sheath knife on you hip and folder in your pocket. Is it really that simple or do you have some other trick way of carying you blades?
Iv'e seen combo knife and axe sheaths usually vintage and shoulder rigs usually tactical but I have not seen them on this site.
So what do you reccomend?
And like we are so fond of saying , SHOW ME THE PICTURES!
Thanks Kirby

You could use kydex for the hatchet, here is a pic from BuyBrown

Half the fun is figuring out this kind of stuff.
I just started worknig with kydex, and it is great, especilly for utility minded items, where you are looking for durability and gettingthe job done.

Leather, of course, will always have it's place, too.
You can't beat a hand crafted leather sheath.

Usually the ax and belt knife go in the backpack, SAK in a pants pocket. It's inconvenient to have stuff hanging off your belt when hiking, I find, particularly if carrying a backpack.

Excellent choice of tools!

However you carry them in the field, it's important that they're with you - if you find yourself afield and your GB mini is back at camp in your BOB then it's not going to do you much good. So try different methods and settle on what works for you in terms of how you use your blades in the field and what's most comfortable.

I carry my BRKT Fieldsman with a carabiner that attaches the sheath to one the front belt loops of my pants. It dangles the way traditional Scandinavian sheaths do, allowing me to sit without the sheath getting in the way. And it's position attached to a front belt loop is very easily accessible without the need to open or reach under a jacket.

If I'm on a short trek my BRKT Mini-axe goes in a bag like this, along with Nalgene bottle, tarp, etc:

Otherwise it's attached to my belt or gets stowed in a jacket pocket. The nice thing about a 10 ounce hatchet is that it can "disappear" into a jacket or coat pocket and not be bothersome.

My Queen Mountain Man pocket knife goes into a belt pouch that has a metal clip made by Raine, Inc.

i carry a shouler bag (possibly a belt mounted bag with leg tie downs in the future) so that the bag falls on my right side, so i carry my small belt pouch with essentials and the fixed blade on my left side. i am a righty, so it can take a second longer to draw the knife, but it really does not bother me. also, the knife i am using now hangs from the tip end of the sheath, and you give it a tug so that the handle and blade pop out of the sheath, so that might change the situation a little bit.

i plan on getting a CS trail hawk in the future, to try out tomahawks, and i plan on hanging that by the head from a loop sewn onto the side of my shoulder bag.

my folder goes in my right hand pocket, all alone, or sometimes with my fixed blade pocket knife in a slim leather pocket style sheath.

I never found the need for an axe, but akennedy73 and I carry the exact same Swiss surplus bag. I sewed a few additional pockets inside mine, and put my folding knife inside when I am going to do a lot of walking. A flat pint nalgene flask fits into the rear pocket that comes in the pouch. My 165OT rides on my belt above my right hip pocket in the factory sheath, the bottom of the sheath tucked into the pocket to keep it from flopping about in rough going. I hardly notice it is there until I need it. If I also carry the 152OT Sharpfinger, it goes on the left side above the pocket. Both can be slid around my belt for easier access, or to get them out of the way when seated. I've never lost either with this carry.

OK, Codger, 'fess up. What goes in that 'hip' flask? After that honey post, mead methinks?

Doc

Actually, it is only spring water. I don't drink alcohol, except tequilla, and rarely that. I can't walk through the woods drinking tequilla, can I? Isn't that what causes the wee people and zombies to come out?

Codger

Well you could, Codger...we'd be days finding you :D

Otherwise, hatchet, hawk or machete in the backpack, fixed blade on the belt, SAK or scout in the pocket on a suspension clip.

Look, zombies I can deal with. No problem. But leprechauns? No way, no how. With zombies, all you have to do is slice and dice. But with leprechauns, all the knives, axes, machetes in the world don't help. You just wind up with them shoved...well, let's just say it isn't pretty.

Codger :o

No, no other tricks.
That's exactly how I carry them.

SAK on a dummy cord-right front pocket. Hatchet and/or knife in backpack or shoulder bag. Like most of you I have owned fixed blade sheath knives for years, but I have rarely worn one on my belt. I really like wearing a neck knife however.

Codger, so you've been there? Tell us some stories :D

In 1952, John Wayne starred with Mauren O'Hara (originally from Dublin) in one of his best movies, John Ford's "The quiet man", which was filmed in and around County Mayo, Ireland. It is rumored that he met and had a confrontation with one or more of the wee people after knocking back a few at the pub. Cohan's Tavern in Cong (it is still there, though now serves as a grocer). Well, you know how the Duke had this funny walk?

Codger, I've seen that movie! Was that you? Not the weebling, but John Wayne?!?! Great scene with Maureen ;)
