My wife's birthday is today and on Tuesday, as a big surprise to her, my buddy, another chiropractor here in town who's the same age as I am (but has far, far richer parents!) took us up in his family's plane! Not just any plane, either, but an amphibian. Hottest, most humid, deadest air day of the year so far, so my friend circled around for a while before we met him to burn off some fuel (so we wouldn't crash, I suppose) and we took off from a little local airstrip to a big lake about 1.5 hours away. Took about 12 minutes in the plane! The plane is a little 4-seater that is about 1/2 the size of the inside of your car, with a single prop up on top. We shared some sushi and sashimi on the ride, then flew by the lake and whipped it around and dropped right in. Some dumba$$ jetskier almost ran into us. He was so busy staring at the plane that had just landed on the lake that he forgot to control his jetski!
Anyway, we taxied up to a nice restaurant right on the water, climbed out, lashed up the plane and had a nice dinner and wine, then hopped back in the plane, took off from the lake and flew home!
Very cool! Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Nice to see how the "other half" lives, too! This weekend he's flying to his family's island up in northern lake MI to do some scuba diving with his buddy while his wife flies off to Mexico for the weekend where she has rented a house for a girl's weekend.
