Now that winter approaches

I need a recommendation for a winter carry. A bulky coat, gloves on etc., make for a carry delema. Tryed an arclite last year, but trying to fashion a zipper grip that can be manipulated with gloves on and then trying to get a grip on the knife makes for an awfully slow draw. Thought about one of the Pantom Knife pieces, but think their a bit pricey for the application. Oh, I should mention that I only live a mile from work and walk more than I drive during the week. Your suggestions please.

Isn't it always winter in Buffalo?

You could try out one of the Benchmade axis lock folders. Holding the locking bar back and flicking your wrist will deploy the blade. Reversing the procedure will close it. No need to fumble with a tiny thumbstud or opening hole. A big 710 or Griptilian should be easy to hold even with gloves on.

The Buck/Strider has got a big handle and a monster thumbstud. Hard to miss that even with gloves, and you can adjust the pivot to open easily. You can even open it ambidextrously without using the thumbstud: put your thumb on the end of the tang and push down and forward and the blade (with a loosened pivot) will snap open.

A Spyderco Military with that big opening hole would probably work, too, but I haven't handled one of those.

I used to wear pair of gloves that are were quite thin they were knit and felt kind of like a sock. I don't know what to call them, but they kept my hands warm and I had more dexterity than a pair of bulky insulated nylon gloves. If you can't figure out what I'm talking about just get a fixed blade it will be easy to carry in your coat and harder to lose than a folder

As a matter of fact, the Military was designed with this specific purpose in mind. The Trademarked Hole was enlarged in this Spydie in order to easily grasp and deploy the blade while wearing gloves. It takes some practice, but once accustomed to it you can flick open and deploy the Military as fast as an auto. If size isn't a factor for you, then the Millie would be just what you're looking for. Good Luck

You can find more info on the Military HERE.

Even Siberia has June, July, August,...and winter!

If it's a matter of the gloves, doing a search for driving gloves or police gloves would take care of that. But it's not a bad idea to have a knife that doesn't depend on the right gloves, too.

Fixed blades can be a problem, fumbling with the sheath, and neck knives are harder to access, zipped up in a cold wind.

I'm sitting here playing with my new Spyderco Massad Ayoob, with a high hump for the hole and a great long handle. Of course, it was designed for self-defense, and looks it ...

And NOOOOOOO Buffalo is not forever under snow. But when we get it, we get it. I have decided to start using a larger book/back pack instead of a breifcase slung over my shoulder to transport needed items to and from the office. I have a Camillus Arclite and I painted the handle black. I mounted the kydex sheath to the left strap and sewn on a piece of black cloth above, which has a long tail and fastens to the strap just below the Arclite with velcro. Makes for a discrete carry and I can release the cover with my left hand and draw with my right. I might wind up cord wrapping the handle to give it a little more traction, but I've tried it with fairly heavy insulated suede gloves and have been able to draw in a fairly quick time with no slippage.
