Greetings all.

Well, the khukuri gods smiled and the postman delivereth.

While writing an email earlier to Uncle Bill the fateful knock at the door came and like a speeding bullet I made for the door.

I painstakingly (okay maybe not entirely) removed the wrapping and thought that perhaps I had been sent a message that Luca Brazzi still sleeps with the fishes.

To my relief, inside the newspaper wrapping was perhaps the best $50 knife purchase I have ever made.

"Wow",I thought, "Now That's A Knife". Is there anyone who ever thought otherwise the first time they laid eyes on one?

I got pretty much what I was expecting looks-wise, having seen a BAS Uncle Bill offered for sale a few days back here on the forum and also as represented on the website.

This one however has a buttcap more like the 15" heavy duty AK which was offered this afternoon, and not like the BAS models with the scrollwork.

What I wasn't prepared for was that the "blems" were much less significant than I had prepared myself for. A few minor hairline type cracks barely wide enough for my thumbnail to penetrate. I'll try to deal with them eventually, but I don't think they'll pose an immediate problem, even the one that goes into the bolster.

The fit and finish are very nice. Clean for the most part and rustic enough to have a feeling of authenticity that one so rarely gets with cookie cutter blades.

The heft of the blade is impressive to say the least. I'll have to head out to the elephant grass, (okay, the Everglades) and stalk big game. (Okay, I'll bring a camera and take pix.

The overall feel is of something exotic between the water buffalo horn, leather, the forged blade etc.

I've already wiped the bearing grease off most everything, and had a RenWax party.

A very nice introduction to the genre.

My thanks to Uncle Bill, my bud Brian and the others who have made my infection with HIKV pleasurable.

Blues brings up something I wanted to ask anyway and so this seems like a good time...

Once my new 18" AK comes what exactly should I do with it before I go out and whack things with it? Any particular treatment to the horn handle or blade? Maybe something that will keep a whole bunch of junk from sticking to it? Nowdays I mostly use Rem-Oil on my guns so I would obviously spray some of that on. What's RenWax?

Gregg

Renaissance Wax: supposedly developed for protectant for museums. Which brings up an excellent point. There are evaporative penetrating oils like WD-40. There are heavier ones like tri-flon and Rem oil that leave protectants. There are greases, and finally the greases so heavy they "dry". These are the waxes. The best protectant I ever used on my blued weapons, and I have very acidic sweat, is Johnson's paste wax. Leave the metal out in the sun to heat up, apply the paste, let dry, buff, reapply...

For leather, the product Sno-seal does an excellent job if allowed to heat up and melt in without shrinking or stretching the leather.

BTW Blues, on your comment about Lucca Brazzi sleeping with the fishes - when Hanuman arrived he was already up to monkey business. On unwrapping him, I discovered he'd already absorbed the Reno ambiance, face buried in a Reno Gazzette article about the upcoming Lifestyles convention at the Reno Hilton. Check out this year's event at the below link:

Just one more reason the little rascal has endeared himself to me.

I guess that a swinger is a swinger no matter what.

Well, I've filled the cracks with Krazy Glue and didn't even get any on the bolster. Not bad for a guy who can't draw stick figures.

On the other hand, the khuk won round one of the sharpening challenge.

I'll get the belly as sharp as the tip and recurve eventually. Gives me something to strive for.

I've decided that it is only appropriate, in the spirit of the Gorkhas, for this knife to accompany me in my gov't vehicle as I perform
my duties as an LEO. I'm no longer on SRT, but I'd bet that my new faithful companion will find some interesting scenarios for deployment. Besides, I need something to occupy my mind during long surveillances.

Many thanks to those who have offered advice and made this (first) acquisition so pleasurable.

Any good paste wax is good for metal tools. You want something with Carnuba in the ingredients. Stay away from the liquid waxes and anything that has kerosene in the mix.
If you are going to use the knife to prepair food use bees wax.

OK, Blues, so you've got the gov't car covered. Personally, I think a 15" Sirupati might be just the ticket for the bike. Then there's always the personal car, the living room, the...

Good point, Brian!

Just what is the appropriate khukri for a stylish black motorcycle?

With friends like you, who needs the IRS?

Actually on reflection, Brian, I think the "sitonpotty" makes more sense for the bathroom.

My pleasure to bring you a smile, Uncle.

The least I can do after the smiles you have sent this way.
