Several years ago at the Chesapeake Knife show, perusing some beautiful damscus knives, a conversation started with none other than Robert Eggerling. As Mr. Eggerling is the producer of some of the top damascus today, I wondered what pocket knife he carried on a day to day basis.
Mr. Eggerling produced a small knife in a leather sheath that he had made himself; turkish twist damascus with a chisel grind, very well made and with quite a personality in the hand. Not cut from a billet, the 'handle' of the knife is actually twisted around while forged. He said he had made several for himself and gifts for friends.
Not knowing whether it would be rude to try and aquire the knife, it slipped away.
Two years later another conversation with Mr. Eggerling at the CKS (after having been assured that it really isn't *that* rude to buy from a makers pocket
) ...what a pleasure dealing with the gentlemen one finds in the knife world! A gracious Mr. Eggerling not only remembered the conversation from several years before, but also took my name and address and a short time later got the knife in the post!
I am now the proud owner of a Bob Eggerling knife. Once again both the knives and the people make it great!
