My buddy Dave kindly sent me a knife to test, made by a relatively new maker- Joel Purkeson.

Some of you may have seen this knife before, in a thread which I can't seem to locate, (any help would be appreciated:)) started by Dave Lisch.

Well, the 'knife' arrived today, and it's not really a knife. Not really a machete and not really a sword. Fact is, I'm not sure what it is. One thing I know for sure, it IS super cool!
I can't wait to get this bad boy out into the bush for some abuse.

Here are some pictures;

I'll get some nice, meaty photos over the weekend. Yay! Long weekend!

By the looks of it I would call it a Machete type knife were it,s looks to be very thin,a good slicer, for sure.

Glad you got it Lorien I am looking forward to seeing what you chop with it I think the thread was an OKCA show thread Joel is a maker to watch and I think we will see some fine knives coming from him as he loves making knives and you see that when you meet him.

Joel is a great guy I have got to know him and his knives from the 5160 club here in Oregon. He does love making knives as David said and he comes up with some cool designs. Excited to see this play out Lorien!

Machetes and coconuts have a long history together, and in a twist of fate, it just so happened that coconuts were on sale yesterday, (my daughter has been asking for one for the past month), so my good wife splurged and there was a coconut waiting to be smashed this morning. It's like this coconut and this knife were drawn together by some sort of cosmic alignment:D

My wife has decided that she enjoys taking pictures and supports my enthusiasm for testing knives in the field. I'm liking where this is all going. She was impacted by our visit with the Bransons, and now knows that I'm not the only crazy guy who likes knives and whose wife supports his craziness. Just fantastic, I'm very happy:)
Plus, she takes some pretty great pictures!

This knife really makes me feel good. We're off to a smashing start:)

Looking forward to getting out into the bush this weekend. Fortunately, a cougar and her cub were just captured in the area, and that's one less feline to worry about. Not that I'd be concerned much carrying this blade with me out there:thumbup:.

Holy smokes, that's a large knife! Looks like it would be a great chopper. Have fun with it this weekend!

Nice chopping, but I especially like the bonk move! Have fun this weekend, can't wait to see what comes from that.

a forest home, for a wanderin gnome;

hope you enjoyed this thread!

ps. in this vid I mentioned 'Georgia Strait' which is, in fact, between Vancouver Island and BC's mainland. The Strait of Juan de Fuca is the body of water which separates Vancouver Island from the Olympic range in Washington state, and it's this body of water which Sooke faces.

Good stuff Lorien :thumbup:

I'm amazed at how familiar the woods and shoreline of B.C. look to me.

When you were showing the trail you're working on, looking at the flora and terrain, I would have thought you were in the woods of Michigans Upper Peninsula.

Your "forest home, for a wanderin gnome" (great title btw ;) ) looked like it could have been a shot from the rocky shore of Lake Superior , or our off shore island jewel, Isle Royale National Park :thumbup:

Good Stuff Lorien !

Thanks for taking the time to show us your home and as always, some fine lookin' blades ;) :)

P.S. I 2nd D'lisch's request for the type of head cam you're using. That would be a perfect perspective to do a WIP from ;)

I can't believe I just said that :foot: :D

I myself am a transplant from the abrupt rocky slopes of the Bruce Penninsula, and grew up wandering the forests of north central Ontario adjacent to Lake Huron/Georgian Bay. Certain times of year, I'm struck by the many similarities between my childhood home and that of the present day. You really notice the differences once winter sets in however! And in the fall, our forests aren't awash with the ruddy and vibrant hues one would be accustomed to being from an area primarily dominated by deciduous trees. But spring and summer, it feels like going home, but maybe it's because I never really left...so long as there are forests nearby I will always feel at home.

As for the camera, it's a Gopro- www.gopro.com
fantastic device, easy to use. If any of you fine knifemaking folk would like to purchase one for your own uses, drop me a line and I can get you one at wholesale. I'll need to order a minimum of 4 at once in order to make it happen. PM me if you're interested

I hope this little edit makes resurrecting this thread worthwhile;

:eek: Now that is a knife! I was expecting a much smaller blade from the title. I dig it! I love beastly, all business knives. Looks like you are having a hell of a lot of fun!
