Now This is a Knife!!!

Great review Buzz,I too share your enthusiasm for the SJ.My personal SJ I had Jerry to customize by removing the extruding rear tang to lighten the knife and make the blade a little faster, sharpen the top tip and put a symetrical edge on it.I am curious though as to the new SJ you have,I notice the grind on the blade is diff from mine.Yours seems to not be flat ground but has the lower part ground, also mine is quarter inch stock while yours is 3/16.Was this offered in the combat grade or only in satin? Also is the edge A or Symetrical? What is the top tip like?is it fine enuff for penetration or nail cleanin?

Nice review, nice knife. Makes me want to get one.... Is the 3/16" standard on all SJ's now?

Thanks for mentioning the grind. I just noticed and corrected my review, as it mentioned my SJ has having a flat grind. It is, in fact, more like a sabre grind, with a dual convex edge. I'm betting that the grind was changed to strengthen the thinner 3/16" stock. I normally shun sabre grinds, just because I find them to be pretty inefficient slicers, but Busse has done a great job in this area. The 3/16” Satin Jack is a great slicer. I’m sure that some of that has to do with the dual convex edge. An asymmetrical edge on a sabre grind might not slice quite as well.

I'm pleased to say that my SJ is a worthy nail cleaner. Again, that might have more to do with the dual convex edge more than anything, as the edge bevel might start further up the blade than on the asymmetrical ground knives.

I could be wrong, but I think that 3/16” is standard on all Satin Jacks now. I sincerely hope so. I’m blown away by mine.

I must have ESP Buzz, I was thinkin of you last night (in a knife kind of way:D ) and was going to post first thing this morning asking if you ever got the SJ and what you thought.

Excellent man, I am glad you found your knife. Let me know how it takes care of those trout!;) I think I may have to get one now, not from lack of trying, just that I keep getting beatin to the FT posts....

Have fun with her man! I'm off to read the review!

Great review and nice pics Buzz:cool:

It's great to hear that you got your NO debacle taken care of and landed yourself the SJ:D

Sooooooooo, when you selling the Marbles for some more Busses?:p

Man, you need to be working at a magazine Buzz. Great review!

Excellent pics too!

My only complaint about the Satin Jack is how my wood shavings keep getting stuck in the d-guard hole in the blade. :D Hehehehe

Niiiiice blade Buzz. Waiting on an SJ Variant myself. Now I'm glad I ordered it after seeing the nice pix you took. Good luck. EC

Great review Buzz!

It is important to note that the SJ is flat ground. The term "sabre ground" refers to being ground only part way up . . . . usually a very shallow grind, less than half-way. We stopped our flat grind just short of the spine in order to add weight to the much thinner blade for maximum chopping effectiveness.

Thanks for the great pics. . .. what kind of camera did you use?

Jerry

Uggh... Re-re-editing the grind on my review.......

The pictures were taken with a cheapo little Fuji MX-1200 digital camera. I have a much better Canon SLR, but forgot to bring it along. I'm going to try to get some pics with the Canon this week. The knife will show a few scratches now though..... err... character marks.... err... loves bites... err... What is the polically correct term for blade scratches?

Glad you like it.
The SJ is right at the top of my short list of first to grab knifes.

Buzz,
Great review, and I love those pics.

Nice work.

Gotta go put some of those pics in the Archive :D:D
