I have a blade I've been working on for some time, 1/8" Aldo's 1084, 8.5 OA 4" blade. I've HT'd it to a nonmagnetic point, replaced in heat for a few more secs, and quenched in canola oil. Then 2 temper cycles at 400°.

But now what? I've read that to remove the HT scales, soak in vinagar. But won't that also force a patina? What do you suggest? I appreciate your help!

i jsut grind them clean and finish the blades
those that say the scale is hard to remove must never have played with the high alloy steels that can be a real bear to geind after HT

What Butch said...just go to grinding. I use to soak in vinegar overnight and then grind (you don't have to worry about patina). But after grinding scale of CPM 154, I've realized the scale on 1084 after HT is child's play.

Don't you still have to sand the blades for their final finish after you take your blades out of the oven? Any patina that may be on them is long gone by the time I finish up with that.

I sanded my knife with 220 sandpaper by hand to remove the build up and clean it. Worked on the bevels until it started to get sharp and then moved my way up to about 2500 grit till it started to turn into a mirror finish. Now I am working on my handle.

You need to go deeper to remove the decarburized steel (under the scale there will be steel that has had carbon diffused out of it and as such will not harden properly) usually at least a few thousandths of an inch deep

I use a worn belt of 60 or 120 grit depending on what is handy to remove the scale. From there I go to a fresh 220 and get it as flat and smooth as I can before I start hand sanding.
