I have seen references form time to time to services that offer returns on lost keys and other items through special coded tags or stickers. I was wondering if anyone had had any experiences with any of them - good or bad experiences - and could advise on one for me. So far, I am pretty good at hanging on to stuff, but the idea of a bit of insurance seems pretty good.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

I used to work at a mental hospital. Every set of keys issued to an employee had a big tag on it that said if found drop in any mailbox, postage guaranteed.

Nobody ever found a set and dropped it in a mailbox. When somebody lost their keys, they were lost. (As I recall a set of keys did come back once or twice over the years, but it was extremely rare. Just once or twice out of about a thousand sets of keys over a period of decades.)

Do what the RAF Police did at a base where I used to stop in for coffee: Attach vital keys to a 6" cube of wood painted bright pink. They were never lost or misplaced!

Now you're a mod at BFC. Not exactly sure why you're using the past tense. ;)
