I recently bought a DMT Magna Guide system because after learning about carbides I found out that traditional methods aren't optimal for vanadium steels. Since I got the stones just a few days ago I figured I would give my ZT 700 and 801 a whirl to see the results. The difference between diamond and anything else (no CBN experience here) is night and day. Reprofiling was the normal terribly long, but once reprofiling was done I finished the edge on the XXF in under 20 minutes.
While the edges are not showroom quality, they are ungodly sharp. My 801 can damn near whittle hair, something that even my sharpest edge was never close to. Both edges are a little sticky sharp, again nothing I was ever close to. How people sharpen without diamonds I know don't know.
