This is going to be $20 less than a 940-1?

- S30V has to be a heck of a lot easier on machinery and cheaper to buy.
- The wood slabs have to be easier on the employees, machines, and cost a bit less.

I would love to have seen an upgrade in the alloy, but this is what I have been singing for a bit and probably will for the foreseeable future.
- Keep in mind, the Barrage and Mini Barrage already came with M390 and they are available with 154cm, S30V, 20cv, and M4 through the custom shop.

That being said, I do like the wood slabs.

Benchmade Benchmade Jimmy, will the weeps slabs be available through the custom shop?

I would think not since they are what makes this the exclusive.
Too bad...

Maybe once these hit the secondary market I will grab a user one and a user m390 bladed barrage donor to make a FrankenBarrage...

As I eluded to in the other thread, if Benchmade thinks they can charge that much for S30V and wood handles, they've taken a complete leave of their senses.

$20?

15% off MSRP is $204. The 940-1 is $267.75. That's $63.75 difference.
Will admit that my numbers were misrepresented. I used MSRP of the above and the price to buy a 940-1 from a vendor that honors Benchmades MAP pricing.
Not equal footing, I will agree.

But does $60 sound reasonable for the alloy and scale material increase?
To me it is borderline, and that is without having to contend with QC issues. Which unfortunately is the common mindset with the current Benchmade production protocols. Misconception or not, it is the mindset of the market that Benchmade has some QC ground to gain.

That doesn't sell knives.

I figured that's what happened. :)

I'm not arguing that there's value here. For me; there isn't. If I wanted a Barrage I would go with the G10/S30v variety most likely. Or the discontinued M390.

Standard 585 (FRN/154cm) = 123.25
585-1 (G10/S30v) = 153.00
586 (G10/Aluminum/M390) = 187
585-1701 (Wood/S30v) = 204

I'm guessing it's the "exclusive" that's driving the price? I'm not a Barrage fan in all honesty but I agree that it's hard to justify the pricing on this one. Especially when the Crooked River comes in G10 or the Diamond wood at no extra cost. I'm sure the checkering adds some costs.

This knife will probably sell well at $204 if only five of it has ever been made. Otherwise ...

BMCGear BMCGear
I have handled them a few times, and they always seemed a bit fat in the pocket for my tastes.

I have seen slabs made by Allan Putnam that slim th Barrage out quite a bit, and those made me immediately take a long second look at the Barrage.
I was thinking M4 custom shop with aftermarket slabs... But we will see what the future holds...

NJBillK NJBillK I don't mind the width too much and like the feel in hand. Just not an assisted type guy I guess. Looked at the 590 Boost last week and it was a miss for me as well. Probably another reason I don't own any ZT's and quit buying Kershaw. Anything US made was assisted and I'm just not for that these days.

A lot of modern ZT is bearing, not assisted. Also, I read that the Barrage "de-assists" rather nicely.

I will be looking into the second part further.

Some of the cost drivers here are the exclusivity and the laser etched secondary processing on the wood handles.

Just built a custom 585 with textured G10 scales and M4 steel for the same price as that hokey thing.

Textured G10 and M4 for the same price.

Hellooooo, McFly????!!!!

(Not directed at you, Jimmy... just the bean counters in the office)

Yea, I don't like flippers/bearings either generally. Just give me a one hand manual folder and I'm happy. ZT is also uber tactical looking. One of the things that I like about Benchmade is the overall design. Spyderco can look a little goofy (that's not a great word but they aren't very streamline for the most part).

Poor Jimmy, lol.

The knife you designed with M4/G10 isn't the same price. I designed it and it's 240 out the door plus shipping and tax. This knife is 240 MSRP.

Again, I'm not arguing value as I don't think this is a high value knife but the numbers aren't identical. :)

I'm picking my custom up at the factory when it's ready, so no shipping or tax (Oregon has no sales tax). If the factory sold the 1701, it'd cost exactly the same out the factory doors as my custom (msrp of $240).

I should have specified those details, but the Benchmade folk value the 1701 as an exact match to the custom. I definitely see your argument though!

Yea, that makes a difference. And I'm in agreement with you; If I'm gonna spend 220 for this (that's what the site has it listed for), I would spend the extra cash for a custom or just go with the G10 model and save roughly 70 bucks. Checkered "non specified" wood does nothing for me, personally. I guess if you're a collector it would since it's an exclusive.

I have an exclusive in my pocket right now but I didn't buy it for that reason. I bought it because I like the platform (Griptiilian) and I like the materials; micarta and M390.

I also wonder what roll the store had in determining the price. They have the right to wiggle some. Roger at knifeworks puts his exclusives on sale and Benchmade is never put on sale.
