Been waiting for an excuse to put some of this wonderful blue jean burl Micarta to use. Butcher_Block was kind enough to pass a bit of this specialty of his on to me and I'm pretty excited about using it. Got some thin slabs cut out of one of the 3/8" thick blocks he made up that I plan to try out on an NRG by Kershaw.

If this turns out as I hope I may even have to make up a blue jean blue custom low rider to go along with it.

I'll have some other things ahead of this one to get done first but figured I'd post it for now at the start up and pick up on it as I can.

Well, apparently I have my fingers back today. :D I think its the coolest laid back NRG on the planet thanks to this pretty earthy great looking denim micarta. What do you think? I know its hard to tell but believe me its cool! A lot of work finishing it but I got it where I like it finally. Bead blasting it didn't please me much so I sanded from 100 to 150 to 220 to 400 to 600 and then buffed it to a point I think I can finally live with it.

I may run out later and get some extended work time super glue and try that finish on it to hopefully fill some small voids that came up as I sanded. In fact I quit sanding on each on due to one that was growing bigger as I went. But I think some clear filler and a nice gloss here when I catch my second wind will finish it off just super.

str....when you take kershaw's apart....does it ever mess up the assisted opening.....i don't know the internal workings as i've never taken one apart....are the pieces inside very delicate....just curious....also i would assume you can take the assisted opening pieces out....would it still open and close normally or do you have to convert it to another type of locking system.....just curious....ryan

They can be tricky but I've gotten pretty used to dealing with them and about all others so what I'd call easy may not be. Its hard to say. This model here is not assisted opening.

On some with thumb studs that are also blade stops like the Leeks the torsion spring that assists the opening is severely missed if you take it out or if it breaks. On others like the Blur you can take it out and not miss it at all. In fact I rather prefer my Blur without the spring installed although currrently and since rebuilding mine into a frame lock I have it installed again. It never hurt the mechanism to take it apart.

About the biggest issue most run into I think is the trick of trying to figure out how to get it all back together properly. If you take one apart I'd suggest paying very close attention to how things sit and the orientation of the spring before moving anything to set it aside.

Nah, but I tell ya what, the first time I opened it up I thought it was. Its darn smooth the way its made. Pretty slick machining in this puppy right here.
