Earlier this year on my flight back from Jamaica my Kershaw Shalot was stolen from my checked luggage. There was a layover in Atlanta so I have no idea when it was taken. In a couple of week I need to travel to Mexico. The thought of not having my blade making me real uneasy. What's to do guys?

Probably the TSA or airport baggage handlers took it. The NSA is to busy listening to our phone calls to be stealing knives.

Yes,

I too have lost a couple knives to the TSA. I've often thought about stiching fishooks into the inside of my luggage or putting in a few stategically placed loaded rat traps. Last I knew that wasn't illegal, but I suspect they'd have issues with it. I think all you can do is insure your baggage. I know some of that may be covered by the commercial Traveler's Insurance that you can buy.

TSA has a serious problem with breaking things, like "TSA approved" luggage locks, and the zip ties they're supposed to put on are easily defeated. With all the easily accesible luggage floating around, it's not surprising when things go missing.

IMHO Get a cabled minisafe like a Gunvault Nanovault 300, Masterlock 5900D, or Sentrysafe P005C and cable it to the luggage internal frame. Put your cutlery inside of it and your cell# and "call for combination" on the outside. It requires anybody who wants in to call you or destroy the safe. You should have one when traveling anyway to keep valuables from walking out of your hotel room.

Ha ha I'm just being over dramatic with this annoyance. Isn't the whole homeland security apparatus belong to NSA? I'm thinking of using 5-6 zip ties to secure my knife to the metal frame of the bag. Or bring more than one cheapies like Opinel and put one in each bag.

I would recommend just going cheap so it's not a big deal if the "inspectors" get sticky fingers. I know this solution sucks but I wouldn't spend any money on protecting my knives. I am going out of town in a couple of weeks and bought a 20$ case sodbuster jr just for the trip

This has me worried as well, I'm going to be flying this summer and taking my Swiss Champion in my Checked Luggage. I would feel naked and helpless if something happened to it. I was thinking of rolling it in a ziplock back with some baby wipes and smearing peanut butter on the inside to scare anyone who might want to open it up.

Yeah, I just bring one that can be easily replaced. I usually just put a Delica in my checked bag. It's a good knife and easier to replace than some of my others.

I always put mine inside on sock and then roll them up like normal. That way if someone does want to steal it they will have to rummage though my sock pocket to find the right pair. Hopefully someone in the back would question why a guy is shoving my socks in his pants (insert joke here)

I was going cheap with the shallot, but got pissed off regardless. Cheaper than that I have these $10 CRKT's I found in a liquidation sale. I guess I will go with in the sock rolls and zip ties to the luggage frame route. Idiots will have to work extra hard to steal my cheap blade. Let hope they don't get mad and piss on my clothes lol.

They won't mark their territory, but they may unscrew your toothpaste. I'm still trying to figure out how my toothpaste manage to arrived half frozen. It was thawed when I packed it.

Here's a off topic scary thought: Why are we trying to prevent theft out of an area that's supposed to be secure!?! This does not inspire confidence in our security system.

Frozen toothpaste, at altitude airplanes get cold in the belly, 35,000 feet gets pretty chilly.

Quoted for genius. Thank you sir, I shall do this from now on.
