NSNs for Benchmades

I've noticed Benchmade dealers advertising the Nimravus as "military issue" and citing the NSN. The Nimravus and a couple other models (autos) have NSNs. Who in the military is buying them and for what?

I remember that the Benchmade AFO had a NSN. If I recollect. . .initially. . .it was for certain AFSC's (PJ's, CCT, etc.). I had one. :D

The idea spread. . .as did the AFSC's that are able to obtain them.

As far as the reason. . .combat related job's/activites.

I've read the current version of the AFO switchblade in black is now Coast Guard issue, which makes some sense - rope work at sea often requires one hand use.
Any supply sergeant with a cooperative commander and slack in their budget could buy the others as a CTA item, I imagine. Unlike MTOE stuff, which is quantity specified for the unit's mission, CTA stuff can be justified by the commander's discretion, like field desks in a headquarters unit. (How many do ya want to haul to the field, guys?)
But all that don't answer what we really wanna know - who's getting the good stuff?

Yea, I'd be particularly interested in who is using the Nimravus. Marines still get Ka-Bar's, right? Aircrews can carry Fallkniven S1s or F1s instead of the GI survival knife. Special operators can get really exotic stuff (Mission Knives, Mad Dog, etc. etc.) so who's getting the Nimravus?

Any item with a nsn can be procured by any military branch for any reason they can justify. case in Point I worked in Survival Equipment in the Air Force for 8 yrs. I worked with the Pararescue, combat control team, special ops, ect. They often would order autos and use them in their work. All they had to do was right an order justifying the items use and submit it for approval. Just as we could have justified ordering leather, or gerber multi-tools.
