I bought some Micras from a fellow selling them on Ebay here in Canada. I asked how he managed to get his hands on them and apparently what happens up here is that anything thats taken by security is given to the Airport chapel. This gentleman was a member of the church that runs the chapel at that particular airport and he said that the proceeds of the sales go back into things required at the chapel.

I rang of the truth so I really didnt feel too bad getting 10 Micras from him, at least they are not being sold by someone who bought them on an Auction to profit from their resale.

I don't know. Regardless of how great the prices may be, it does feel wrong.

Rarely does these auctions have nicer knives, but sometimes they do. It always makes me feel bad to see something that could have been someone's grandfather's knife that they cherish and just forgot it was in their pocket.

I was out with a friend recently and somehow her hand made its way into my pocket and she asked "do you always carry a knife?" I honestly didn't know I had it on me. It's become so natural over the years to just put it in my pocket with whatever else I've got. I would probably be in tears if at the airport security check I realized that I still had the Buck 110 my grandfather gave me on my belt. Sure it's not a top of the line knife, but it means a lot to me and I wouldn't want it to end up on ebay in a box of assorted crap.

No... I don't think, no matter what the knives or the price, I could bid on one of these.

I would feel bad too but just remember its not that hard to put your knives in your checked luggage. I have never had anything taken from me except a cheap little nail clipper. Finders keepers loosers weepers.

Do they take it away from you or do they give you the opportunity to do something about it? In my experience usually they ask you whether they can throw it. If you don't want to you can always go back out and get an envelope and mail it back. Then get back in line. Most of the knives that are there are probably ones that people don't mind giving/throwing away. Thus the many nail clippers and swiss army knives and micras.

If you don't buy it someone else will and it's always better if a true knife collector/user gets it.

Some guys have all the luck. ;)

Bottom line on these auctions..... By now, everyone knows the rules. Take a blade into an airport, your most likely going to lose it. It's better they go to auction than get destroyed.

A few years ago I gave my youngest son the Camillus US Shield pocket knife (TL-29) that I had in RVN in 1966. He is curently at the Command and General Staff College and had to perform a small mission at the War College in PA. He was on his way back to Kansas and with all the things on his mind, including relocation of his family, he inadvertently left the knife in his carry-on. (Hint Rangers sometimes carry knives) It was confiscated by some mutant at the airport. He was really upset that he had lost the knife I gave him. I, on the other hand, was upset that I had lost the country I had given him, and was outraged that an Army Ranger and a Field Grade Officer in uniform was treated this way. What the hell has happened to us? No one offered to mail it for him or make any other arrangements. Sure, I know what the rules are, but this used to be the greatest country in the world. Maybe I'm just getting old.

But you can't "racially profile" at an airport.

That sucks big time 6A

What was that confiscating fool thinking? "This Ranger officer is going to hijack a plane with a vintage slipjoint"?

Sheesh!

Sad story, but very well put.
I also would not buy a knife that I thought had been confiscated from some unfortunate citizen who had mistakenly left it in his pocket. Hell, my wife has forgotten the small SAK in her purse and yup -- just gone.

I was once travelling and had forgotten that I had a rather nice auto on my belt. This was when the pat-downs at the airports were conducted by US army personnel. Well, sure enough, I got caught. I HAD to catch that plane, so I told the sarge--"you are not going to confiscate this and throw it into a pile--this is now YOURS. If they'll let you carry an M16, then this ought not to be a problem." He was certainly appreciative, but it did hurt. Better him than some airport dick.

Sad for the people who were either clueless, or who had no ill will. I was going to buy several collections, I saw some lower end name brands among the cheap crap. I saw an Emerson CQC, I think it was a 7, but it got too expensive for me. I think that auction ended very high, I guess it was because of the Emerson. Could've been a Chinese copy too ;). I check them out from time to time, but it's usually knockoff SAKS, multitools, razors and cheap knives.

Did a quick check, counted four Spydies in this auction. Am I right? No, I am not the seller.

This appears to be authorized by the State of PA. Wouldn't it serve the public better by issuing the name brands in that pile to LEOs, firefighters, etc?
