Hey everyone!

This is my first post on blade forms so forgive me if this has already been posted or answered or is too stupid to be posting I haven’t quite figured out the whole form configuration.

However! I have been reading up and learned a lot from these posts but haven’t been able to find one thing...

I am trying to replace a balisong pivot pin - I want to get a better one because I love this knife and don’t want to scrap it- The question is I have no idea how to figure out what size pin I am even looking for..? Also need tips on best material and way to insert- if possible I would want to replace the pin with a screw pin or whatever they’re called so I can adjust the tightness? Help me you pros!

I'll move this one to the forum r8shell suggested. Good luck!

Take it to hardware store and they should have rod stock. See what fits.
Brass would work but the nickel type may be better.
Look up some video on how to peen and then cut to fit.

When I was a teen I fixed my Bali with a nail from the garage and it lasted till I lost it.

Thanks man! Going to take it there - I even called around I couldn’t find anything thanks for the help!

If you still have original pivot assembled, take some pics of both sides. Watch some tubes on removing and replacing pivots, there are several ways, but they all work on the same concept. Measure and record your originals dimensions. Google knife making supplies / parts / bla bla. Call or email to buy threaded or unthreaded pivot.
or use a nail;)

My Balisong is still put together and functional I just want to take those pans out and switch them out with pens that I can adjust the tightness on! So you are saying to take out the pans that are currently in my knife and measure them and then order the other pin the same size? I found a site that had Balisong parts like his and pens and stuff like that on it but they’re sizing was everywhere so I had no idea what part to buy and I wasn’t about to buy every single one LoL

Pins* lol

Before taking it apart, consider first watching some videos. For me, the solution for servicing traditionally pinned knives was watching tubes and applying concepts and tools observed. Also, at first, deciphering measurements is confusing. And, I imagine there is more numerous dimensions then simply replacing straight pins.
You might consider simply tightening or loosening the ones you have now.
Why not start with watching some video to see if you want to do the work your talking about. I just got a ton of seemingly helpful videos and websites for tightening, replacing, taking apart and putting back together butterflies. I googled "replacing balisong pivot pins" and "diy replacing balisong pivot pins with screws" and "how to tighten pivot pins on a butterfly knife," etc.

I’m going to google those and watch the videos - you said tighten pins I have current? I didn’t know you could even do that! Going to google that too lol

guessing your google-foo gave you the 411 on trying to tighten pivots by today, well if the bbq did not get in the way:)
lets us reflect and remember this memorial day-

I am finding after researching online and calling around... nothing helpful. lol unfortunately I feel the best route would be to just keep the blade and removing the handles (barely worth it). Feeling semi-defeated I think I will be investing in a new balisong with pivot pins already able to be tightened/loosened.

Thanks for help all!

I have bought my share of knives for modding, the enjoyment of solving the puzzle, repairing and putting back in service, and only bat about 333 on inexpensive garage sale type knives. But I always appreciate the build, learn something or reinforce something learned already. Reinforcement can be positive or negative. Take the thing apart, take pics, use freezer or lunch bags to put parts in. As you are going to save up and buy a better quality unit. The experience will make you a more informed consumer. Heck, you could measure your old pins and go to one of many knife parts websites and find new pins, put the thing together, and then gift your old knife to a loved one.
