The Busse Shop has been hit hard by the latest and greatest strain of what can only be described as, "the INFI of all colds" We are down 6 men right now and need to get some home remedies that might give us a fighting chance. Any new (or old) hot-totty recipes we should know about? Anything would be greatly appreciated, as we have tried the old Black Label and micarta blend and still have had no luck.

Yours in nuclea. . . .cough . . .. cough. ..

Every year if I get the flu i buy 1 gallon of orange juice and two gallons of white grape juice. And I try to drink it all in two days. My flu only lasts about 3 days when I get it.

Jerry,
Lots of fluids, Gatoraid is great and soup is great, but both are better. If you have a cold, and not flu, try something called "Cold Eeze", it works for me. Then get as much sleep as possible, a bit of the good stuff helps

. Give your body everything it needs to fight the virus.

This is NOT medical advice. I'm not a Physician. The Dr. is for "Ph.D." not "M.D.". Sorry, I don't want to mislead anyone.

Hope you feel better,
Rich

Tea cup of pure vodka + 2 teaspoons of black pepper. Drink at once. Quite a challenge to that though

Then go to bed

Next morning it's gonna be all ok.

Gator97, you forgot to tell him that it doesn't necessarily cure anything; you just won't care about it anymore...

We all know about plenty of fluids, vitamin C, chicken soup (actually supported by some scientific research), etc.

Sure, drink your juice, eat your vitamins, maybe even take some echinacea/goldenseal, if you think it will help at this point. But the hardest one of all is the one you also know: REST! Yeah, sure make His Nuclearness rest and be still, right!
biggrin.gif

But that's what works. LOTS of rest for a few days.

Good luck, get better.

As a clinical pharmacist, I second drinking lots of fluids, take vitamin C 500 to 1000 mg daily, use acetaminophen for aches and pain, eat well and get a proper amount of rest, no exceptions. It is likely too late to try one of the new oral or inhaled flu remedies at this stage as these should be used within 12 hours of symptoms showing.

Otherwise, get well...

Jerry, rest, rest, rest, and more rest...screw the knife making for awhile and get some rest. (besides I already have mine

)

To help you rest alittle try this:
In a big cup make some tea(of choice)and add at least 1 tablespoon of honey, a healthy squirt of lemon juice and then fill the rest of the cup up with Yukon Jack. Drink while HOT and then go to bed for the above mentioned REST and some sweating.
If you know what a mustard plaster is then have your wife put one on you feet while you are trying to rest.

When its all over....GO GET A FLU SHOT!

A good way to fight a raw throat is to take a shot of salt water. The little bacteria set up camp in your throat and that's what makes it hurt. The salt dehydrates their slug like bodies too fast and they burst. It's nasty but put like two teaspoons or one heaping tablespoon in about 1 to 2 ounces of water that's hot enough to melt the slat but not so hot you can;t drink it and just slam it. The salt will get most of them. Don't drink anything for about 30 minutes to make sure you have given the little critters enough time to suffer and die. Benefits of having a Doctor as a Dad.

Just what I want.....Slugs busted wide open filling my throat with lots of nasty puss.

I think that a knife giveaway is just what the doctor ordered.

I'm not sure if you'll feel any better, but, I might.

Seriously though, take the day off, drink lots of fluids, get some rest, and hang out with the forumites.

Hope ya'll feel better!!!

After having prescribed some of these remedies around the shop and trying some myself, it has become painfully clear that perhaps, in some cases, the flu ain't so bad. The flu may make you feel like hell but there's a good chance that some of these remedies might kill you.

Go to your favorite Asian market and ask for Kam Wo Tea(pronounced Gum Wo Cha). It is a black tea that tastes probably like the burnt flakes off infi steel after being scraped off your belts. No kidding. But 10 doses at less than $2.50 beats any drugstore prescription. As for the stuffed up noses and external aches ask for Chooy Foong Yow.

Kin,
Thanks for the tip-
I could have used that advice about 2 weeks ago- felt like somebody parked a truck on me.
I work at the edge of Chinatown (Canal St.) Time to buy some tea.
See you at the Sheraton- (Tuff Cloths again?)
Cheers,
Mike

Nuclear Ginger Tea

Jerry, peel 5 or so bulbs of ginger root and put a pot of water on to boil. Slice the peeled ginger into thin slivers and once the water is boiling, throw them in. Let them stew at a boil until the water is colored (it will be a light caramel color.) Then let it cool until it won't burn your mouth and drink it hot with fresh lemon juice (optional), honey (optional), or both. Add micarta dust to taste. (Don't really do this; it's just a cheap joke) If your mouth doesn't tingle, it's not strong enough. Great for easing the stuffy head feeling, decongesting you a bit, and numbing your throat (naturally). Ginger has good oxygenating properties, and this is a very good and potent way to take it. It doesn't taste too bad either.

By the way, have any of your doctors suggested using comfrey and glucosamine on your left hand? I would. Even if you're surrounded by skeptics, what have you got to loose?

Now get better! Every new Busse knife that ships out is potentially destined to save someone's life!

And all God's Busse equipped soldiers said AMEN.

I DO NOT CHOOSE TO BE A COMMON MAN

"It is my right to be uncommon...if I can; I seek opportunity...not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stole calm of utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud, and unafraid; to think and act for myself; enjoy the benefits of my creations and to face the world boldly and say,
This I have done, and this is what it means to be an American."

--Dean Alfrange

Just got over it myself but am nursing a lingering dry cough. This cough always seems to last forever and I can't shake it. The fact that I have to lecture 12 hours per week doesn't help. I go through cough drops until I'm sick of them and then almost always take to chewing gum just to keep my throat moist. If anyone has a cure for a dry cough I'd love to hear about it.

Also, the best way to cure the flu or cold is to not get it in the first place. I used to get it a lot more than I do now. I started drinking OJ every morning with my breakfast and I also pop an echinacea. I went two years without a cold after I started doing this. That's a record for me since I normally get a cold at least twice per year. When you teach, you are in small rooms with lots of kids hacking away and it is rare to NOT get what goes around.

Mike, the green/ orange box is recommended. But don' t concern your self with the last words in parenthesis at the bottom of the reverse side of the box.

Se ya at the show.

I have a friend who says that every time he starts to feel sick he spends a night downing a bottle of Southern Comfort. He swears that kills off whatever it is that's "bugging" him. Haven't tried it myself though.

If that doesn't work, you might also want to invite a few forumites who live close by to temp at the shop. I live too far away for that to be me, but you could probably get a few guys to work two weeks for a knife
