What percentage of the total market for custom knives is represented by the Blade Forums community here?
Just curious if anyone has some estimate or idea..
Thanks in advance,
David

I suppose the data would hinge on categories also:

Knifemaker
consumer/collectors
business/dealers/show promoters?
...

How could you ever quantify that? I'd wager to say that every guy on my block would groove to a nice custom knife. But I'm probably the only one that posts on bladeforums.com.

Probably a better question to ask is how many of the bladeforum users would purchase a custom knife? Somebody knows the total user count. Then what? Perhaps you could determine the zip code of the users and then determine the medium income per user. Then do some math. And make some really big assumptions around disposable income and the like.

A typical response rate for a targeted direct mail piece is two percent. So if you mail out 10,000 direct mail pieces, you might get a response from 200 users. Not a sale, but a response. Sales vary based upon industry, product, location, etc.

If you really wanted to do back of the napkin math, you could go tally the total # of page views per forum here (some forums cater to custom knives, etc.), then do the math and determine the % of the total user base that views those particular forums. If I was trying to decided how many of those users might buy something from that particular category, I'd use something like 0.025% of the users that express interest in that forum. So, say, 10,000 users. 4% read the custom knife forum. A quarter of a percent of those users? You might get one user to purchase.

See you can make numbers say anything.

Numbers/Percentages are very misleading. All I can say is that I have sold knives all across the U.S. and in many, many foreign countries primarily because of "BLADE FORUMS". In addition to sales, I have made some super life-long friends.

Best money anyone in the knifemaking business could ever spend.

A poll

I think this subforum should have more polls
Data on the avg custom knife buyer seems slim...........as least to me

Complete guesstimate: Maybe 10-15%? There are forums all over which aren't as big, but have a set of members who don't visit here.

We have no idea how many lurk and read without entering into the discussions. More than meets the eye. ;)

And then there are those who don't do the internet. TONS of them.

I'm with Robert ^^^; despite the broadbased limitation, it's a HUGE audience. Well worth it for me, and my clients.

I am only curious,..there are knifemakers who you rarely ever find mentioned here, though they may have been making knives full-time for 25 years or more. Leads me to wonder what segment/population we have?

Very astute and spot on. It’s like the ocean, a river or stream- we only see the surface and have no idea what’s below it.

I believe we here on the BF only represent a fraction of a percent of the broad custom knife community.
There's a big custom knife world out there, including many of whom don't visit forums or don't venture on to the internet at all.
Even though I feel that CKCA members in general seem to be very engaged in the community many don't participate on forums.

Look how many knifemakers don't participate on the forums, and they probably have the most to gain from participation.

I know it's not really what your after 2knife, but it's very interesting. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click on the "sitemeter" button on the left and you'll be able to see number of views Bladeforum has. You can look by day, week, or month. There's alot of folks that come here, and not all of them post.
