Numbers Stamped on the Bolster of my Cocobolo Tomcat. Why?

Hi everybody!

I am brand new here, but have spent the last three hours scouring this forum (and the internet according to Google) looking for an answer. Here's the question:

I have a Tomcat with cocobolo handles (eBay, 2 years ago, $40!) that has the number 467 stamped on the bolster. What does that number mean? Why is it there? Is it simply to taunt me? To mock me? Why must it torment me so? Why can't it just leave me alone?

Okay, seriously. I found an earlier thread (10/23/2002) that referenced these numbers, but he was just looking for an estimate on the value. No one explained the significance of the mysterious number. I would love to find out that it was part of a limited and numbered edition, but knowing my luck, it will turn out to be the early method of coding factory seconds.

I'm certain that among the fine folks that read this, there will be many who know and are willing to share with one who does not.

I e-mailed SOG about the mystery numbers, including a photograph, and here was their answer:

Chris,
The Limited Edition Cocobolo Tomcat was numbered from #000 (prototype) to #500. Congrats. We are all curious as to what you gave for this.

I only paid $40 for this knife on eBay! Talk about lucky!

No........I don't, you need to call David at SOG and ask him or Vinny if they know any more about these knives/numbers, or even send email to Chris at SOG and see if he knows any more. That is a great price on that knife with or without numbers I think.

When you have time, look in here for pics etc........this is kind of slow and some pages don't always load but it has loads of older SOG info.........pretty neat I think.
