Probably a stupid question but now that I'm addicted like the rest of the folk here, why are some Commanders numbered and others are not?

Thanks for the responses.

Here are the models that are serialized (that I can recall off the top of my head):

  • *The first year of production, 1998
*The CN coated sets (one 50/50 Commander and one 50/50 CQC7B serialized the same)
    *The 2000 Green-T (non "Mil-Spec") Commanders

Anyone remember any others?

Hey John,

I've got a question regarding the Commander. In late July or August of 1997 I saw and handled a Commander at a knife shop in downtown San Francisco. It looked like a regular production knife and was priced as such. Do you think that this was a proto based on the year?

If it was in '97, especially if it was not numbered it almost has to be a proto, and they only wanted ~$200?!?!
I bought mine from Ernie at Blade in June '98 and the numbers there were in the 050s through 070s.

Ark, if you saw it in a shop in '97, I'd have to say that's a pretty good guess. The regular production Commanders didn't come out until '98.

If you only knew then what you know now, eh?

It was a visit in 98 not 97 as I had mistakingly posted. Just checked with my friend out in San Francisco who was with me at the time. He recalls the visit to the knife shop because he walked out with a new Randall Bear Bowie in hand. He keeps it under the seat in his car- Hey, what can I say? He's from Georgia!
