So in a random " i want one" Anyone know of any nunchaku makers say out of some polycarbonate/some strong plastic and paracord for the chain? Or any very well made nunchakus?

Appreciate any responses in advance.

Tim

no, but my pair is (semi) modern. i keep a pair handy, that have been in my family for 30 years, they're made from the butts of cue sticks :-D

Check out Mondanack batons, I know they used to make nunchaku out of the same material that they used for their polycarbonate batons.. I have seen a few pair floating around in some of the police supply stores.. I know for a while they were issued in commiefornia and florida (broward county)

I'd recommend making your own.

The rod stock can't cost that much and I think it can be done with only a saw and drill.

Knifemaker Mickey Yurco makes (or at least used to make) nunchaku out of micarta and 550 cord. If you search the web you might find an e-mail address for him, but he has no site that I know of.

Mmmmm....Titanium. Pricey, though, I'd bet.

Actually I was thinking bar stock nylon, micarta, or one of the reinforced phenolic resins.

Get enough for two 18" chucks, drill a 0.5" transvers bore and a 0.25 centered bore from the end to the 0.05" tranverse bore. Taper or round the ends.

Easier with a lathe, but it can be done without such machines.

Many moons ago a friend of mine made a pair out of round aluminum stock in the machine shop when he was in the apprentice program in one of our local shipyards. They were beautiful, turned, tapered, knurled & checkered- had chain swivels. One problem: once you got them "started" it was hard to stop them. Another friend had a junked car that we beat the holy hell out of w/ the chucks. Half-speed would crush a skull like a grape.

Mickey Yurco (shorinki@aol.com) makes some very servicable nunchaku out of Micarta (the two pair on the far right). The Orcutt's (third from right) work well also. The Monadnock's were way to heavy for me and caused some tendonitis issues.

FWIW My choice is Hickory
Hickory is an excellent wood to use its dosnt give a massive rebound effect as some other materials do plus it dosnt dent/deform very easily. I perfer cordage instead of chain Hickory is easy to steam and shape.mortice, drill, and recess . The hard part is learning how to properly tie the cordage use beeswax to keep the pivit points of the cords supple.

Remember that Nunchaku is pretty much law enforcement regulated everywhere in the USA

Now if your making a set of "speed chucks" for demonstartion ,freestyle kata etc then use cordage and pvc

Nylon of Delrin round stock is cheap, strong, and very slightly flexible. check McMaster Carr

A while ago I bought a couple feet of 1" diameter nylon for some project.
I remember it was heftier than i expected. I casually slapped it against my palm...then winced and hopped up and down for a while.

I don't know anything about nunchuku, but I submit my experience for whatever it is worth.
