Model TM-301X-5 shown here:

Significantly disappointing. Other Nuwai models have a very Surefire-like beam (an obvious focused center spot, with fading low-level light for peripheral vision).

This model is only mildly focused. It puts out more light than the Inova XO3, but the center of the beam is not nearly as bright because all of the light is spread more evenly. It's basically fixed closer to a flood beam.

If you look at the Flashlightreviews.com numbers, note that the "throw" rating (their number for the brightness level right at the center) is much lower than the XO3, even though the total output is higher. I should have read more carefully, because those numbers are exactly what I am seeing.

It's still a very good flashlight. The click switch feels durable with a good solid click, and it's at just the right elevation in the tube to avoid accidental activation while still being easy to use. The light is whiter than the Inova (unless Inova has improved it, mine is about 2 years old). For my purposes, it's actually probably going to work well, even if it's not as "cool" as I hoped.

Luxeon V's cast more of a flood, LuxIII throws better despite having less overall output.

A 5-watt is four 1-watts that haven't been cut apart, overdriven a little so it's 5 watts instead of 4. Because the beam source is large the beam has to be large too.

I looked really close and I can see it. That seems like kind of a crummy way to make an upgraded LED.

I guess I will just stick to Cree-based Fenix models. I have a P1D CE. The beam isn't perfect, but it's close.

At the time it was invented it was the only way to get more than 1 watt (well, other than overdriving a 1 watt, which has its limits). Now that there are other ways it's not as popular....
