The clip adds lateral strength as well as enhancing tip peneterability.

Wish I had the knife to post pics of. I figured tip peneterability but would not have guessed lateral strength. Thanks for the quick answer. If one of these ever goes for sale I will certainly do my best to purchase it and post pics.
